Bandelier National Monument is announcing the return of its popular Winter Solstice Walks Dec. 20-22, 2024. The ranger-led program will start at 7 a.m. on all three days at the Bandelier National Monument Visitor Center.

ABIQUIU – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff at Abiquiu Lake will host their annual midwinter eagle survey, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.

No pre-registration is required, and all are welcome to participate.

The event is free and open to the public. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Abiquiu Lake Visitor Center for registration beginning at 9 a.m. Hot coffee and snacks will be provided during registration.

Sandhill Crane chicks can leave the nest within 8 hours of hatching, and are even capable of swimming. The earliest Sandhill Crane fossil, estimated to be 2.5 million years old, was unearthed in the Macasphalt Shell Pit in Florida.
