SANTA FE — Hundreds of students flocked to the Roundhouse Thursday to advocate for STEAM education across New Mexico at this year’s STEAM Day at the Legislature, hosted by LANL Foundation.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education is a vital part of getting our state ready for the future. Every student in New Mexico should have access to STEAM education so they can developthe knowledge, skills, and practices demanded by the 21st Century.

Facing Gopher Challenges At County Parks & Sports Fields

The Los Alamos County Parks Division is committed to ensuring the safety and usability across all county parks and sports fields, including those at Overlook Park. So when citizens began to express concern over the presence of gophers and their potential hazards, Superintendent Wendy Parker ramped up her already aggressive approach to address and mitigate these challenges.

Woodland Trail Reopens Following Sewer Overflow Issue

The Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities (DPU) treated a sewer overflow that occurred over the weekend on the Woodland Trail behind Fire Station #4 near the corner of Diamond Drive and Range Road.

The trail has been reopened.

Bill To Raise State’s Fossil Fuel Royalty Rates Moves Ahead

New Mexico’s fossil fuel industry is enjoying a record boom in the Permian Basin, and state officials want the education system to benefit even more than it has from the oil-rich region by making companies pay more to drill on state lands there. 

The House Commerce and Economic Development Committee voted 6-5 Monday, mostly along party lines, in favor of House Bill 48, which would raise the maximum royalty rates on state lands to 25 percent from the current 20 percent — the first such increase since the 1970s.
