SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Ohkay Owingeh Governor Larry Phillips, Jr., announced the signing of the Indian Water Rights Settlement for the Rio Chama stream system. After decades of litigation, the settlement resolves the Pueblo’s water rights claims on the Rio Chama.

Daily Postcard: A Cat-Faced Spider is spotted admiring solar lights Tuesday evening at a residence off Diamond Drive. The Cat-faced Spider is a common name shared by this species and a second North American spider. Its other common name, Jewel Spider, is also shared with an Australian spider. This harmless spider is an angulate spider, meaning it has two pronounced bumps at the top of its abdomen. The ‘cat face’ on the abdomen is created by these two bumps, which form the cat’s ‘ears’, and the pattern in the center of the abdomen, which forms the ‘face’. LAFD Lifts Fire Restriction Order 2023-0002

Los Alamos County Fire (LAFD) Chief Troy Hughes announced that he issued an order effective Monday, Aug. 28, that rescinds fire restrictions enacted under Los Alamos Fire Department Order 2023-0002. 

The decision to lift the July 11 order is due to a significant decrease in fire danger, thanks to recent rainfall, a rise in fuel moisture, low fire activity levels, and forecasted cooler and wetter weather patterns, Chief Hughes said, adding that he thanks the community for their cooperation and diligence during this period of heightened fire risk.

New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission Launches Expanded Lower Rio Grande Groundwater Conservation Program

LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC) is expanding on the success of its Lower Rio Grande (LRG) Water Management Pilot Project and will be accepting grant applications for the LRG Groundwater Conservation Program starting Sept. 25.
