U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón is revealing a new poem that will fly into space aboard NASA’s Europa Clipper mission on a year’s long journey to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa.
The poem, first shared publicly during a special reading at the Library of Congress, will be engraved on the spacecraft set to launch in October 2024.

Santa Fe National Forest Under Flash Flood Warning
SFNF News:
- Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the Cerro Pelado burned area
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Cerro Pelado burned area within the Santa Fe National Forest. Heavy rainfall will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams and ditches in the burned area.
Other counties within the SFNF are under weather advisories including a Flood Watch for San Miguel County.

UC Riverside: Biological Cleanup Process Discovered For Certain ‘Forever Chemical’ Pollutants
University of California, Riverside, chemical and environmental engineering scientists have identified two species of bacteria found in soil that break down a class of stubborn “forever chemicals,” giving hope for low-cost biological cleanup of industrial pollutants.
These bacteria destroy a subgroup of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, that have one or more chlorine atoms within their chemical structure, Yujie Men, an assistant professor in the Bourns College of Engineering, and her UCR colleagues, reported in the journal Natural Water.

Purgatory, the US Forest Service, and La Plata County Historical Commission (LPCHC) are accepting proposals from third parties interested in relocating and restoring the Columbine Ski Patrol cabin.
Purgatory is redeveloping the land where the Columbine Ski Patrol cabin is now located to provide additional resort services.

Traffic Crash At Bottom Of Truck Route Closes Roadway
UPDATE: The road closure on Truck Route is still in effect; however, the western roadblock on East Jemez is just east of Elk Ridge Mobile Home Park to allow residents to access Elk Ridge.
LAPD News:
A vehicle crash occurred this morning in which a dump truck overturned at the bottom of the truck route (East Jemez) at mile marker # 9. One person has been transported for injuries.
There is also a diesel spill.
Los Alamos Police, Santa Fe Sherriff’s Office, Los Alamos Fire Department and LANL Hazmat are on the scene.

Volunteers Sought For National Trails Day Woodland Trail Work Project On Saturday June 3
COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County Open Space and Trails is working to maintain Woodland Trail and seeking volunteers to assist. The volunteers will work in small groups to fix sections of eroded trail, hauling fill dirt and building drain dips.
Meeting Time:
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3.
Location:
- Woodland Trailhead at Arizona Avenue and Woodland Road.
What To Bring:
- Please wear boots, gloves, long pants, long sleeved shirt and eye protection and bring water and snacks for the day.

The heavy spring runoff continues this week. The major rivers like the Rio Grande, Rio Chama and Pecos are all running well-above normal, making fishing conditions difficult.
Trout can still be .caught under these conditions. Fish the edges of the stream out of the main current. Bait, especially worms, is probably your best choice. Lures and flies should have some flash to them and need to be heavy enough to sink quickly.
