UC Riverside: Non-Native Plant Thrives In Singed Soil
Stinknet. Photo by John Scheuring
UC Riverside News:
Though prescribed burns reduce wildfire threats and even improve habitat for some animals, new research shows these fires also spread stinknet, an aptly named weed currently invading superblooms across the Southwestern U.S.
Stinknet, also called globe chamomile, is native to South Africa, but is commonly seen in photos of California’s colorful superblooms. “Not all flowering plants are indicative of a healthy ecosystem,” Loralee Larios said, UC Riverside assistant botany professor and study co-author. “This one isn’t.”

Daily Postcard: Red Crossbill Spotted Near Mountain School
Daily Postcard: A male Red Crossbill is spotted Saturday near Mountain Elementary School on North Road. A fascinating finch of coniferous woodlands, the Red Crossbill forages on nutritious seeds in pine, hemlock, Douglas-fir, and spruce cones. Their specialized bills allow them to break into unopened cones, giving them an advantage over other finch species. Because conifers produce seeds unpredictably, Red Crossbills sometimes wander (or “irrupt”) far beyond their usual range. They nest wherever and whenever they find abundant food, sometimes even in winter. Several types of Red Crossbill Read More

From LAPD Chief Dino Sgambellone:
Please do not release or remove animals from Ashley Pond.
Animal Control found a pair of goslings, which were located at the pond (link). They do not belong to Ed and Gwen. It is suspected that they were left by someone. They are possibly a week, or two old and they are not strong or old enough to be at the pond with the much larger, older geese and ducks.
It may have been someone with good intentions, but it is not in the best interest or care for animals to be left at the pond.
We would like to advise against abandoning animals at the pond. Animal Control will care for the goslings Read More
