Cooper’s Hawk Perches In Chinese Elm On Barranca Mesa
With a bird feeder fully stocked, it is no surprise that hawks show up to see what they can snare. This Cooper’s Hawk has shown up several times in the last week and perched for a while in the Chinese Elm overlooking the feeder at this residence on Barranca Mesa. Of course, the smaller birds are wary and stay away until the hawk has left. Photo by Ken HansonCounty Environmental Services: Trick Or Treat? The Answer Is No! Candy Wrappers Are NOT Recyclable
Nope. Those candy wrappers enveloping those enticing Trick or Treats are not recyclable. They may feel like paper, but they’re actually a composite of materials including plastics and aluminum, and therefore, those buckets of wrappers I’ve personally generated while sitting at Zoom meetings these past two weeks, are destined for the landfill.
Here’s the good news, though. Manufacturers are listening to candy consumers (including their own kids) who are concerned about trashing the planet. Mars Wrigley, for example, is working with Danimer Scientific to develop “home compostable Read More

The first significant storm with winter-like conditions arrived in New Mexico over the weekend. Cold temperatures, strong winds, cold rain and some snow accompanied the storm. Although somewhat lacking in moisture, it did bring much colder temperatures with highs in the 40’s and 50’s statewide.
With the colder temperatures, the stocking of rainbow trout will soon shift to Southern New Mexico, as water temperatures will be cool enough for trout to survive. The stockings will continue into early spring. Tingley Beach in Albuquerque Read More

Fact Of The Day:
Autumn heralds the arrival of many things: pumpkin pie, crisp morning air, and, apparently, more intelligent rodents.
Male squirrels get smarter in the fall due to their hippocampus (a part of the brain involved in memory) increasing in size during the caching season — the time of year when they gather even more nuts than usual. (In an especially adorable move, they stuff their snacks in their cheeks before moving their food to a more permanent storage spot.)
Interestingly, female squirrel brains don’t show the same effect; researchers speculate that male squirrel Read More
