Science: AI predicts physics of future fault slip in laboratory earthquakes:

An artificial-intelligence approach borrowed from natural-language processing — much like language translation and auto-fill for text on your smartphone — can predict future fault friction and the next failure time with high resolution in laboratory earthquakes. The technique, applying AI to the fault’s acoustic signals, advances previous work and goes beyond by predicting aspects of the future state of the fault’s physical system. Tree Thought To Be Dead Makes Spectacular Comeback

A tree filled with colorful fall leaves is spotted Monday at a home in the Pinon Trails neighborhood of White Rock. Eleven years ago in the summertime this home was vacant and this tree without a single leaf was thought to be dead. Placing a hose on a slow drip running over nutrition sticks inserted around its base began to draw the tree back to life. Drive Underway For Donating Seeds To Community Garden

COMMUNITY News:

Are you harvesting seeds from your garden this fall? Or do you have unopened seed packages left from the summer growing season? Consider donating your seeds to the Los Alamos Community Seed Library.

Donation boxes for seeds are available at Mesa Public Library, White Rock branch library and PEEC.

The Los Alamos Community Seed Library is a volunteer-based collaboration between PEEC, Los Alamos County Library System and local gardeners.

The seed library will make seeds available to community members at Mesa Public Library beginning in March of 2023, just in time for spring planting! Read More

Periodic Closures Begin In Bandelier National Monument Monday For Preservation And Accessibility Projects

Beginning Monday Oct. 17, visitors to Bandelier National Monument should be prepared for periodic closures of trails and archaeological sites in Frijoles Canyon as construction projects begin.

The Pueblo Loop Trail will not be affected. Most of the Monument’s main attractions will remain open for the duration of the construction project.

LANL: Floodplain Statement Of Findings Issued For LANL Firing Range Gate Installation Project

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Floodplain Statement of Findings for proposed installation of three gates at the all-terrain vehicle/pedestrian walkway bridges and a permanent replacement gate at the main entrance to Los Alamos National Laboratory’s live firing range.

These four gates will be used to control vehicle access to individual firing ranges and add a visual aid to deter pedestrians from walking into individual firing ranges.
