DOE/ARPA-E Announces $32M In Project Funding For Development Of Low-Cost Fusion Concepts … LANL Receiving $5M In 2 Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy today announced the winners of $32 million in funding for 15 projects as part of the Breakthroughs Enabling THermonuclear-fusion Energy (BETHE) program.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is awarded some $5 million:

  • Target Formation and Integrated Experiments for Plasma-Jet Driven Magneto-Inertial Fusion – $4,618,001; and
  • Electromagnetic and Particle Diagnostics for Transformative Fusion-Energy Concepts – $375,000.

Due To COVID-19, NNSA Adds 15 Days To Public Comment Period On Plutonium Pit Production At Los Alamos

LANL News:

In response to requests for additional time based on disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) has extended by 15 days the public comment period for the draft Supplement Analysis to the 2008 Site-wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for Continued Operations of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

The document examines whether the environmental impacts associated with expanded plutonium pit production at LANL require preparation of a new or supplemental EIS for LANL.

NMDGF: Hemorrhagic Disease Cause Of Rabbit Deaths

NMDGF News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (Department) and the New Mexico Livestock Board report that Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus type 2 (RHDV-2) is the cause for recent rabbit deaths in both wild jackrabbit and cottontail populations as well as in domestic rabbit production facilities.

RHDV-2 is highly contagious among rabbits; however, it is not known to be transmissible to humans or pets. RHDV-2 is from a different viral family from the coronavirus and is not related to COVID-19.

Los Alamos Fire Marshal Comments On Maximum Occupancy Requirements Under Amended Public Health Order

COUNTY News:

Effective this morning, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s amended public health order restricting essential business operations, i.e. grocery stores, limits the number of individuals within retail space to 20 percent or less of maximum occupancy.

In addition, hotels, motels, and other places of lodging such as RV Parks shall operate at 25 percent of maximum occupancy.

This order requires business owners and store managers alike to police the number of occupants in their stores.

SANTA FE – The past weekend on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) saw crowded day use sites, jammed parking areas and heavy visitor traffic through gateway communities, in spite of federal, state and local guidance on social distancing and group size to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

County Issues Reminder: Trails, Parks, Dogs & COVID-19

Los Alamos County would like to remind residents using County parks, trails and other open spaces of the importance of maintaining social distancing within these areas as much as possible.

Mass gatherings are still prohibited as outlined in the State of New Mexico’s executive order. No more than five individuals should be gathered in parks or using trails. County Parks’ crews have installed signage about social distancing and mass gatherings in parks.
