U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke today announced that $720,660 in revenues available through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) will be distributed to New Mexico for Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants that support outdoor recreation and conservation projects.
 
These funds, which are made up of non-taxpayer dollars from Outer Continental Shelf lease revenues, are part of $61.6 million being awarded to the 50 states, the Territories, and the District of Columbia. The

The National Weather Service (NWS) and New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NMDHSEM) conduct the annual campaign to promote awareness of life-threatening weather hazards that affect New Mexico during the Summer Monsoon season.

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center, the non-profit that operates the Los Alamos Nature Center, is seeking volunteers.
 
The nature center is short-staffed for volunteers in the following areas:
 
  • Docents for the gift shop;
  • Assistants for educational programs;
  • Outreach;
  • Data-entry; and
  • Gardeners.
 
Volunteers are matched with jobs based on their interest and skillsets and scheduling is flexible to meet individual needs.

Ute Park Fire At 77 Percent Containment

NMDF News:

The Ute Fire has burned 36,740 acres including 26,387 acres on the Philmont Scout Ranch and is now 77 percent contained.

The fire began at 2 :10 p.m., May 31 on Highway 64 in Ute Park between Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Pajarito Astronomers will be holding a County-Sponsored Dark Night starting at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, June 16 at Spirio Soccer Field, Overlook Park.
 
Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes, and star gaze. A crescent Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and its moons, and Saturn and its rings will potentially be visible during the evening. After the May 29 fishing report was compiled, several events happened that closed some of the fishing areas mentioned in the report to anglers. Santa Fe National Forest closed its lands May 30 to all recreational activities due to the extreme fire danger. The areas that this affected included all streams in the Jemez Mountain area, Fenton Lake State Park and San Gregorio Lake near Los Alamos. The closure remains in effect.
