A group of Native American and faith leaders delivered a letter April 19 signed by more than 500 clergy and faith leaders from 40 states to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke opposing weakening the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Methane and Waste Prevention Rule. SANTA FE  Due to overall dry conditions across the forest fire managers announce they will not conduct prescribed burns on the Santa Fe National Forest while in fire restrictions.
 
Monsoon rains forecasted in July could, however, allow fire restrictions to be lifted sometime in the summer. If that happens, and if conditions allow, prescribed burns could resume as well.

French Mesa Prescribed Burn On Hold

SANTA FE  Due to unfavorable moisture levels and weather conditions, fire managers at the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) placed the French Mesa prescribed burn on hold.
 
Additionally, forest service personnel would like the public to report any suspicious activity in the Mesa Poleo area where there were two arson fires this year, and in any other areas within the Coyote Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest by calling the Coyote Ranger District office at the phone number located at the bottom of the news release.

With streamflows running low for this time of year and the State Game and Fish Department making heavy stockings of rainbow trout throughout Northern New Mexico, the fishing has been very good for anglers.

Following the Stage 1 Fire Restriction that was implemented last week by the Santa Fe National Forest, Superintendent Jason Lott would like to remind visitors that Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in place year round at Bandelier.

DPU Seeks Volunteers For 2018 Drinking Water Lead And Copper Testing

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is seeking residential volunteers to assist in this year’s drinking water lead and copper testing.

In accordance the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule, DPU will sample water from taps within 30 homes that meet certain requirements. The test is free to residential volunteers.

USDA Seeks Applications For Investments To Encourage Use Of Bioenergy

USDA News:
 
WASHINGTON, D.C.  Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett has announced that USDA is accepting applications to encourage the use of renewable biomass as an alternative for fossil fuels to operate eligible biorefineries.
 
Funding is being made available under the Repowering Assistance Program. To be eligible, biorefineries must have been in existence on or before June 18, 2008. This program provides financial incentives to install new systems that use or produce new energy from renewable biomass.
