SANTA FE ― All Santa Fe National Forest offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 19, in observance of President’s Day. Forest offices will resume regular business hours Tuesday, Feb. 20.
 
In honor of President’s Day, the Santa Fe National Forest will waive fees at many day-use recreation sites and amenities Monday, Feb. 19.

SANTA FE ― The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is now accepting applications for 2018-2019 Recycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) Fund grants for scrap tire management, illegal dumping abatement, and recycling projects.
 
Municipalities, counties, solid waste authorities, cooperative associations (as defined in the RAID Act), land grant communities, pueblos, tribes, and nations are eligible for funds totaling $900,000. Pajarito Mountain in Los Alamos received 5 inches of powder Wednesday night to freshen up the slopes.
 
Pajarito is open today through Monday, Feb. 19 for the holiday weekend.
 
Children seven and younger, in fourth and fifth grades or age 70 and older, can ski for free. Lift tickets are $24 for everyone else.

PEEC: Guided Eight-Mile Hike In White Rock Canyon

Saturday, Feb. 17, Paul Arendt will lead an eight-mile loop hike connecting the Red Dot Trail to the Blue Dot Trail in which participants will see petroglyphs, springs and the beauty of White Rock Canyon in the winter.

 

This rugged outing begins at 9 a.m., and takes the group about six hours to complete the loop. Space is limited, and registration is required for this hike, organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and the New Mexico Wildlife Center (NMWC) have received a Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico Healthy Kids Health Families (HKHF) grant for the popular, free Nature Playtimes program.
 
The grant will ensure that PEEC can continue to provide this program to the community every Monday morning at the Los Alamos Nature Center on Canyon Road.
 
The grant also provides funds for the NMWC to begin a pilot program of Nature Playtimes at its facility

Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colo., received 15 inches of snow over the past 24 hours and 21 inches in the past three days and 95 percent of its trails are now open as a result of all this fresh powder.

Cebollita Prescribed Burn Starts In March

SANTA FE ― To take advantage of favorable conditions, to include fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, fire managers on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) expect to begin a broadcast prescribed burn in March in the Cebollita area to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire.
 
As weather conditions permit, the Cebollita prescribed burn could take place anytime between March 1 and March 17.

BLM: Revision To Methane Waste Prevention Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― As part of President Trump’s Executive Order 13783 promoting energy independence [Section 7 (6)(iv)] from March 28, 2017, to review and modify federal regulations that unnecessarily hinder economic growth and energy development, the Bureau of Land Management today announced a proposal to revise the 2016 final Waste Prevention Rule (also known as the venting and flaring rule).  
 
The proposed rule would eliminate duplicative regulatory requirements and re-establish long-standing requirements that the 2016 final rule sought to replace.
