Fallen Tree Causes Small Fire On West Road

Los Alamos Fire Department responded to a small fire at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on West Road, which burned about a 10th of an acre. The fire was caused by a tree that fell on a powerline. Pajarito Mountain Ski Area experienced a power outage as a result of the fallen tree and about a dozen skiers were evacuated from a lift. Deputy Chief Steve DeWald said having a grass fire in January is quite unusual but that the area is more susceptible to these types of incidents due to lack of moisture. WASHINGTON, D.C. – During the lapse of appropriations and the subsequent shutdown of the federal government, the majority of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands across the country will remain as accessible as possible while still following all applicable laws and procedures.

BLM roads, trails, campgrounds, boat ramps and recreation sites will remain accessible to visitors, but emergency and rescue services will be limited.

NNSA Collaborates With Global Healthcare Company To Complete Conversion Of Mo-99 Production To LEU-Based Process

WASHINGTON, D.C.  The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) Wednesday announced that Curium, a global healthcare company, has completed the conversion of its molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) production process from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU).

Cuba Ranger District Plans La Jara & Chaparral Piles Prescribed Burns

SANTA FE  To take advantage of unseasonably favorable conditions, to include fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, fire managers on the Cuba Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) expect to begin ignitions on the La Jara piles and Chaparral piles sometime between Jan. 22 and March 30 to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire.
 
Weather permitting, crews are expected to treat up to 79 acres of the La Jara piles and up to 49 acres of the Chaparral piles.
