The Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium has a special show about our local galaxies at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 and a full-dome film Dark Matter Mystery scree ning at 2 p.m. Jan. 20. These shows are organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Education Center (PEEC).
What do we know about our neighbor galaxies? Paul Arendt will share answers to these and more questions about our Universe within four million light-years at 7 p.m. Jan. 19.

BLM News:WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dec. 4, 2017, President Donald Trump issued Proclamation 9681 modifying the boundary of the Bears Ears National Monument to the smallest area compatible with the proper care and management of important objects of historic and scientific interest.
This action is part of a larger effort by President Trump and the Department of the Interior to ensure that the broad powers granted to the President under the Antiquities Act are not used as a tool to unnecessarily restrict access to public land on a large scale.

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant Closure Announced

FOE News:WASHINGTON, D.C. ― The plan to close California’s last nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, at the end of its current operating lease was approved Thursday by the California Public Utilities Commission.
Pacific Gas and Electric, Friends of the Earth, and other environmental and labor organizations reached a historic agreement in 2016 to shut down the two reactors at Diablo Canyon and replace them with renewable energy, efficiency and energy storage. Thursday’s decision makes a nuclear-free California one step closer.

SFNF News:SANTA FE ― All Santa Fe National Forest offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Forest offices will resume regular business hours Tuesday, Jan. 16.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy, the Santa Fe National Forest will waive fees at many day-use recreation sites and amenities Monday, Jan. 15.
