The Unitarian Church is hosting a Community Plant Swap 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 15 and again May 22 at Unitarian Church of Los Alamos (195 East Road, Suite 101 in the TRK building between East Park Pool and the Fire Station).
 
Please bring plants you wish to give away, and take home any you can use. All unclaimed plants after the swap will be put to good use. We encourage growing some of one’s own food and creating bio-diversity, so try some new plants. Don’t have a plant to swap? No problem. Take some anyway.

Guided Hike To Cave Of The Winds May 14

Trail expert Craig Martin will lead a hike to the local Cave of the Winds Saturday, May 14. The two-mile hike includes 500 feet of elevation gain and a bit of a scramble to reach the cave entrance. This hike, organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is one of many events to help people get outside and enjoy nature.

Craig Martin and Terry Foxx will be at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road in Los Alamos 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 to sign copies of their new book Plants of the Jemez Mountains Volume 1.

The book, the first in a three-volume series, will be available for purchase in the nature center gift shop.

Plants of the Jemez Mountains Volume 1 contains clear and informative drawings, color photos, and descriptions of the trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, and horsetails found in the Jemez Mountains. The book also includes helpful guides for the novice naturalist.

Carlos Valdez Leads Rose Pruning Workshop May 7

GARDEN News:

Carlos Valdez from the Los Alamos County Cooperative Extension Services Department will conduct a workshop about the care and pruning of roses at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7 in the Memorial Rose Garden behind Fuller Lodge.

Valdez will demonstrate pruning techniques and answer questions about growing roses in the local environment.

Attendees are encouraged to wear long sleeves and bring pruning shears and gloves. Get hands-on experience helping the Los Alamos Garden Club prune the roses in the Memorial Rose Garden.
