U.S. Sen. Tom Udall will celebrate historic progress on the the push to reform the broken chemical safety law with a rally at an Albuquerque business devoted to selling home and building products free of hazardous chemicals.
 
Joining Udall will be business owners, building trade workers, the March of Dimes, moms and experts on health and safety, including Dr. Cheryl Willman of the UNM Cancer Center, Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins and Caroline Scruggs of UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning.

SFNF Issues Order Prohibiting Marijuana

SANTA FE  In order to provide for public health and safety and protect resources, the Santa Fe National Forest issued an order that prohibits possessing, storing or transporting marijuana within Forest boundaries.
 
The order, which is in effect until May 31, 2018, allows Forest Service law enforcement personnel to issue citations to violators. Marijuana possession, storage or transport on the Forest is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations and/or imprisonment for not

Today’s Bear Sighting In Quemazon Is Reminder About Living With Large Predators In Los Alamos County

A bear is spotted at 1 p.m. today first on the deck and then helping himself to the contents of a birdfeeder hanging in a tall tree in the backyard of a home in Quemazon. The homeowner contacted the police who are now tracking the bear. When the bear left the residence, he was traveling in a northeasterly direction. The latest word is he was spotted near Torreon in Quemazon a short while later and perhaps moved on to lower Quemazon. The Quemazon Montessori has been notified. Courtesy photo

The Los Alamos Master Gardeners invites the community to their Demonstration Garden Fair, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11.

Children are invited to come and participate in the activities especially for them. For a Butterfly Hunt, children will be given a list of questions. Each of the butterflies, scattered throughout the garden, answers one of the questions. A second activity will be seed planting in cups that the child will take home. Every child is a winner with prizes for participating.

What better way to celebrate National Trails Day than to hike? Local trail expert Craig Martin is leading a hike 10:15 a.m. Saturday, June 4, up Water Canyon to the meadow, where hikers can enjoy running water, flowers, and interesting trail stories.

This free hike is great for kids with a bit of hiking experience. The hike is about two miles round trip with around 400 feet of elevation gain.

Visitors To Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District Campgrounds Advised To Check For Potable Water

SANTA FE  As the outdoor recreation season gets underway on the Santa Fe National Forest, visitors to three campgrounds on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District are advised to bring enough drinking water to meet their needs for their stay.
 
The Holy Ghost, E.V. Long and El Porvenir Campgrounds do not have potable water this year. Shallow wells at these campgrounds may receive surface water recharge from the nearby river and natural runoff, which is at risk of contamination from pathogens harmful to human health.
