Leonard: Breath And Panic Attacks

By LAURA LEONARD
Doctor of Chiropractic
Los Alamos

Have you ever experienced the out of control feeling of a panic attack?

I was in my mid-30s when I learned first-hand what a panic attack felt like. I had pulled up at a red light and boom … my heart started beating out of my chest and I felt like I was going to pass out. The first clue that I wasn’t dying was that I was able to drive myself to the nearest ER.

It’s funny now looking back on how illogical my mind was at that moment. Clearly, I wasn’t dying but how would I know, I had never experienced anything like this before. After several months of repeated panic Read More

Gruninger: Strength Pose Of The Month Side Arm Plank

By JACCI GRUNINGER, MS, C-IAYT, ERYT500

Balance, strength and grace. We all want it don’t we?

Okay, maybe I am only looking for the combination of those three things. Side Arm Plank Pose, to me, is the epitome of these three characteristics. I remember when this pose was out of my league and so difficult.

Yes, even yoga teachers have to start somewhere. However, with patience first, then practice, I also remember the day I moved into this posture with confidence and ease.

It was incredible (I’ll admit it took me a year) to feel myself float from down dog or plank into side arm plank without Read More

Khalsa Acupuncture Reopening Business In Los Alamos

By Dr. SEVA S.S.S. KHALSA

I’m happy to say that Khalsa Acupuncture is returning to Los Alamos — in the same place as the old place, and in the same room in the Small Business Center.

The previous renter promised to give me first dibs on his space if he left, and sure enough, he needs to be closer to the airport so he’s moving to Albuquerque and he offered me the space beginning in a couple of weeks, so Friday, February 18th will be my first day seeing patients in Los Alamos again.

Exact dates and hours TBD so let me know what you’d like and I’ll be there.

House Bill Could Clear Way For Legal Use Of Fentanyl Test Strips In New Mexico

HB 52 Co-sponsor Rep. Christine Chandler (D-Los Alamos)

By PHAEDRA HAYWOOD
The Santa Fe New Mexican

The word fentanyl doesn’t appear anywhere in House Bill 52.

But alarm over deaths caused by the potent synthetic opioid is driving support for the proposed legislation, which would decriminalize the use and possession of test strips used to determine whether the drug is lurking in other substances.

Several people who testified in favor of the bill at a recent legislative committee hearing, including one of its co-sponsors, did so with tears in their eyes, saying their own lives had been touched Read More

Gruninger: The Niyamas – Contentment (Santosha)

By JACCI GRUNINGER, MS, C-IAYT, ERYT500
Los Alamos

The second Niyama on Patanjali’s 8-fold path is Santosha or contentment.

This Niyama asks us to fall in love with ourselves and our life as we are and it is right now. If it’s a brilliant New Mexico day, we are content, if it is a snowy, rainy, icy day, we are content.

Of course, here in Los Alamos, I enjoy a gray and rainy day. But you get my meaning right?

Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, Tik Tok, magazines, ads, store aisles, books etc. sell us a bill of discontent. These social media platforms and our buy, buy, buy, beat the Jones, look better, feel better, Read More

Leonard: Hack Your Life With The Spuds Diet?

By LAURA LEONARD
Doctor of Chiropractic

Many fad diets have hit the headlines through the years, and it feels like you need a PhD in nutrition to decipher, which ones work and which don’t.

The latest and greatest fad that I recently came across is championed by Dr. John McDougall MD in his book “The Starch Solution”.

Dr. McDougall is a professed vegan and expert on veganism with several published books on diet and how it affects our health. When I first came across a headline about potatoes and weight loss, I was skeptical to say the least.

As I started unrolling more information on Google, Read More
