Fr. Glenn: Seeking The Good

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

You may remember the movie “Letters from Iwo Jima” that came out about 10 years ago. “Letters” is fairly unique (in American cinema, at least) in telling the story of that World War II battle from a Japanese point of view. A particularly moving scene is when a Japanese soldier who knows English translates a killed Marine’s letter from home to a group of Japanese soldiers—a letter which transforms their attitudes from viewing the Americans as barbarians to seeing them as fellow men and warriors also simply doing what they see Read More

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Honor Your Bette

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

For many, many years Bette was my best friend. We were together during a particularly drama-filled era of our lives.

We were going through angst-filled ups and downs, as both of our marriages fell to pieces while we were trying to meet the never-ending demands of raising children. We took turns holding each other up and holding each other together when necessary. On the day Bette’s divorce was final she found out she had advanced-stage breast cancer.

I was at home with her when the doctor’s office called wanting her to come in so they could discuss her biopsy results. Read More

An Open Book: A Lucky Day

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

The house had sold, most things were packed, and we had a place to live in faraway Los Alamos. Remaining on our to-do list was to finally visit those tourist sites we had always postponed for some time later. On our list was the Lowell National Historical Park, so we packed up the kids, 4, 6, and 8 years old on a beautiful fall morning in New England, and made the short drive to the shores of the Merrimack River, where some of the earliest textile mill buildings of the American Industrial Revolution had been restored.

My first exposure to a National Historical Park, we enjoyed Read More

Yom Kippur In Brief

What: Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year, when we are closest to G‑d and to the essence of our souls. Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement,” as the verse states, “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before G‑d.”

When: The 10th day of Tishrei, coming on the heels of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year, which is on the first and second days of Tishrei).

How: For nearly 26 hours (in 2017, from several minutes before sunset Sept. 29 until after nightfall Sept. 30) we “afflict our souls” by avoiding the following five actions: Read More

Fr. Glenn: Time…Precious Time

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Cute joke in the e-mail the other day:

A priest waited in line to fill his car with gas just before a long holiday weekend, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, an attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. “Father,” said the young man, “I’m so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.” The priest chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”

Ah, time, precious time. In our early years it passes so lethargically, but Read More
