Just One Thing To Do This Week: Watch Your Carbs — I Mean, Crabs

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

This is a story I wrote a several years ago when we had a home on the beach in Kino Bay, Mexico. Tis crab season, so I thought I would share it with you…

Lately I have noticed there are crabs all over the beach. So I decided it’s a good time to make crab cakes. I bet you think you know where this story is going; but you’re wrong. I did not go running down the beach with a net trying to catch crabs. Crabs have pincers, pincers that can sever a finger (I saw that on Animal Planet). I jump in my mini-van and drive down to the pier.

When I pull up to the pier a dozen fishermen run up to me with bags Read More

Sharing Ailments – Zoobiquity

During our 40 plus years with the Hen House domestic birds and dogs, I’ve found eight out of 11 diseases or characteristics we’ve shared, similar to those that the authors describe in their book Zoobiquity: What Animals Can Teach Us About Health and the Science of Healing.

Barbara Matterson-Horowitz and Kathrytn Bowers conclude their delightful book of observations and animal stories by saying that we humans are not alone in how we suffer and how our ailments

Home Country: Disappointments

By SLIM RANDLES
Home Country

It’s fair time again. Time for dreams to come true and for disappointments to temporarily sweep through our lives. But the disappointments can’t really get much of a purchase, because there’s too much fun going on.

Last year’s surprise winner of the quilting competition, Windy Wilson, didn’t win this year, but he was ‘honorably mentioned,’ which is pretty good for an old cowboy and camp cook. Windy was having a deep-fried turkey leg later. When the boys from the Mule Barn found him, and commiserated with him on his lack of a blue ribbon, he just told them,

By CAROL A. CLARK
Los Alamos Daily Post

Often in Los Alamos people are spotted going out of their way to help others. This column highlights those people. Their gestures of kindness both great and small are inspirational and strengthen one’s faith in humanity.

I recall one such incident that occurred a couple of years ago in which a teenage boy went way out of his way to help me. This memorable day started out like any other with me walking my dog behind a local church. We walk in that secluded area because my dog weighs just 5 lbs. and I worry we might encounter a large dog roaming Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Mystery Of Suffering

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

If the forecast on Friday was correct, and if you’re reading this on Sunday, at this very moment hurricane Irma will be grinding its way through Florida and perhaps up the East Coast. And José is swirling around the eastern Caribbean, building up steam for yet another possible assault. All affected by such storms are in our prayers, and we urge all to charity to help victims rebuild.

We wonder why disasters occur—natural, manmade, and even personal accidents and illness. These are the common lot of all mankind. The perennial Read More

I’d be doin’ what I love and lovin’ what I do;
If I could make a livin’ out of lovin’ you.
– Allen Jackson (Sung by Clay Walker).

I must confess that I recently realized my relationship with God had changed. When I first began a personal relationship with Him, it was as a scared child. God was a real comfort to me during some really troubling times. He brought me peace and gave me strength in every situation. Read More

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Marvel At The Wonder In All Things

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

“Well,” I whisper quietly into Helen’s ear. “What do you think? Is that a man or a woman?”

The tears that blurred my vision a few moments earlier are drying. The palpitations of my heart thumping hard in my chest are easing as well. I sigh and take a deep breath, exhaling slowly. Then another. She does the same.

Together, we stare, bewildered. Together, we consider the long reddish hair that disappears beneath the pink shawl, the slim forlorn white face, and the thin, pale hands. The figure is leaning away from their supposed husband.

“I don’t know,” she replies. “It really Read More
