Just One Thing To Do This Week: Throw A Party

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

I really love throwing a good party, and I have been organizing and hosting gatherings both personally and professionally for nearly 40 years. One of the first events I ever hosted was a housewarming party. My now ex-husband and I had bought a brand new tract home in a starter neighborhood.
We were thrilled to be homeowners. It was March in Phoenix and I was heavily pregnant. My daughter was two years old and my son was due in a few short weeks.
I had worked for days to get our new home clean and organized. We had decorated and covered the folding tables in lovely linens,

Homeownership is part of the American Dream. Owning their own home is among many people’s goals, but accomplishing this aspiration is a whole other story. Affording a mortgage or a down payment on a house can be a major obstacle in the path to homeownership.

Affordable housing seems to be a major

Smart Design By Suzette: Living A Simpler Life In A Modern World

By SUZETTE FOX
Los Alamos

Today’s world has many luxuries that are supposed to make life easier.

At times they may, but other times, they make life more complicated. Yes, I need a kitchen remodel, yes a bathroom remodel too. But when I’m feeling stressed out by what I ‘think’ I need, I look inward at what is making me unhappy or anxious. It might not be the remodel at all. It might be a combination of life stressors – observing the effect it has on my family, my finances and my sanity.

To feel a sense of peace and happiness again, I try to

“You don’t mean it!”

“Sure as I’m sittin’ here, Doc,” Herb said, putting an extra swirl to his coffee and cream.

“Flying lessons?”

“Yessir. Said he wanted to do it before he got old. I know. I know. He’s already old, but still, he’s up about every weekend now, buzzing around.”

“That’s just nuts,” Doc said, “I know for a fact he won’t see 70 again.”

“True enough, Doc, but you know they aren’t letting him take the plane up by himself.”

“Thank goodness for that. But what in the world made him want to fly a plane?”

“When

LAVNS: Unavoidable Tough Topic

Unavoidable Tough Topic
By LAVNS

No one likes to talk about our own or a loved one’s death. However, as much as we may wish to avoid the conversation, the event is unavoidable.

Planning things ahead of time will grant some peace of mind and lessen the family’s burden of making so many difficult decisions at the time of death.

  • For instance, my husband and I recently talked with our adult daughter to make sure she knew what we both wanted at the time of our deaths, including the location of everything she will need. Listed below are some of the questions that we needed to answer for ourselves and to also ask

Fr. Glenn: The Curious Mind

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Had a minor illness last week, and the ol’ brain started wondering: “Hmmm. How does the immune system fix this? Think I’ll look it up.” Or you might see some device and think: “Huh. I wonder how that works.” And then off to the Internet or to the library or to the toolbox you go … seeking explanation.

Intellectual curiosity—something not lacking in THIS town. Perhaps we with science and engineering backgrounds have this propensity more than most. “Wait! YOU have a science background?!” Yup; B.S. in engineering from UT Austin; Read More

BANDELIER News:

Life in Bandelier … the Ancestral Pueblo people lived in Bandelier from approximately 1150 CE to 1550 CE. They built homes carved from the volcanic tuff and planted crops in mesatop fields. Corn, beans, and squash were central to their diet, supplemented by native plants and meat from deer, rabbit, and squirrel.

Domesticated turkeys were used for both their feathers and meat while dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship.

Pastor Granillo: Time

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
. —Pink Floyd “Time”

I love this lyric. It reminds me that I cannot pinpoint the moment when I realized that much of time had passed me by. I remember, when I was a child, that becoming a teenager seemed so far off. I remember, as a teen, thinking that 18 and 21 were so far off. I remember, being a young adult, and thinking

How the Hen House Turns—Don’t Mess With Parrots
By CARY NEEPER
Formerly of Los Alamos

Last week I was asked to care for three parrots, while their adoptive ”parents” traveled to Paris.

The job seemed simple enough—rotate the three food and water dishes to the outside of each bird’s cage, clean them and add ¼ cup of water to one, kibbles to a second, and chopped vegetables to the third.

I prepared the chopped vegetables on arrival and stored them in the refrigerator. Okay. So far so good. We had decided

Smart Design With Suzette: The Value Of Interior Design – Why Hire A Designer?

Working with an interior designer. Courtesy photo

By SUZETTE FOX
Los Alamos

Lately I’ve been pondering how to communicate the value of interior design. Defining one’s personal value is more than what service we offer, of course, but it’s good to communicate a lifetime’s wealth of knowledge in order to help others.

One of the most common myths about working with an interior designer is that it will cost too much. While it is true that some designers command high fees, many charge rates that are quite reasonable and affordable. An interior designer can even save you money by helping you avoid Read More

McQuiston: What Is Additional Living Expense Coverage?

By ALLEN McQUISTON
The Jemez Agency

Not many people sit and think about what they would do if a devastating tornado or fire completely demolished their home and left them “homeless.” When the unthinkable happens, Additional Living Expense, an often overlooked coverage that is typically part of a homeowners policy, may prove to be a financial and emotional lifesaver.

Homeowners insurance is an intangible asset that can be difficult to understand – until you really need it! Yet it provides peace of mind should a catastrophe occur. Most homeowners and renters insurance policies include Additional Read More
