Home Country: Standing As An American Citizen

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

Windy Wilson was on the prowl, this beautiful Independence Day morning, searching the neighborhood for something to do for others.

He decided to let his weekly day helping others come on the Fourth this week, because he was feeling very American.

Let’s see … he thought … I can circumlocute over to Mrs. Hennessey’s and see if her flower garden needs weeding. She’s got very close veins and the sugar diabeets, and getting around ain’t easy.

He headed in that direction when he came across two friends of his arguing over

Our Sacred Honor

Everyone be safe this holiday, especially with the fireworks. We’ve already had one major fire near us this year (Cajete); that’s more than enough! Watch those campfires, too!

As we celebrate Independence Day this week, it’s a time for reflection and thanksgiving. This year, of course, we have a new president—some say for good, some say for ill. But that which all should give thanks for concerning such a change is the peaceful transfer of power and governing—a method of government and transition arguably Read More

Sportsmanship and easygoing methods are all right, but it is the prospect of a hot fight that brings out the crowds. –John McGraw

“We need to get there at least an hour before they open the doors.”

“I know,” I told my wife, “I’m hurrying.”

Although we were over an hour early, a line had already formed. Actually, it was more like a mob of people hovering around the entrance doors. Of the six sets of entry doors that lead to the venue, all but one were closed.

It was being used by staff to enter and exit and make last minute

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Exercise Gratitude

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

A few months ago I received an email from the UNM Mindful Center offering a day course entitled: Letting Go: A Mindfulness Meditation Retreat. It was to be led by Michelle DuVal, a remarkable and gifted meditation teacher.

I have a few issues (SURPRISE)—some of which are decades old—that continue to drag on my soul and dampen my spirit. These are issues that I think I have let go, and I think they are gone for good, and then one day… poof… they re-appear seemingly from nowhere and I am once again struggling to let go and move forward.

I envisioned Michelle waving a magic wand Read More

Can you believe we are mid-summer already? It’s our country’s birthday and time to celebrate! My family loves fireworks. We are blessed enough to watch them from our deck, so the day will be filled with good eats – ribs on the barbeque, lawn games, probably even a trip to the pool.

It doesn’t take much to decorate for Independence Day. You can decorate with food, flowers, and lawn decorations. Follow these guidelines for a red, white and blue, patriotic celebration.

A divorced father living in Los Alamos travels 750 miles one way on a Friday then drives back Sunday, once a month to visit his children.

His ex-wife attends college and is taking an intensive summer course, which allowed the kids to stay with dad this summer. It is the only time he gets to see his children for more than a weekend. Due to unanticipated medical expenses, finances are tight and he can’t take a month off work. His kids were awarded YMCA Annual Campaign scholarships to Y Camp.

Dr. Brent W. Laartz

Dr. Brent W. Laartz thought he was in for the ride of his lifetime when he set out on a horseback riding excursion in Costa Rica.

Admittedly younger and more naïve than he is today, Laartz – an infectious disease specialist and author of the book How to Avoid Contagious Diseases (www.drlaartz.com) –  failed to take some of the precautions necessary to avoid becoming one of the 40 percent of travelers every year who bring back an unwanted souvenir of a major illness from their trip.
