Pastor Raul Granillo: God Of The Storm

By Pastor RAUL GRANILLO
Los Alamos

God of the Storm.

No sooner had my mother thought that she could pay all of the bills for the month when I came in to tell her that I had accidently broke the neighbors window with my baseball.

I couldn’t understand why her eyes teared up as she called my dad to ask for an advance on the child support. I was 11 years old, and I already realized that life was about surviving one storm only to be beaten by another. It doesn’t take long to learn this lesson.

As an adult, I struggled with my own storms in life. As everything fell apart around me, I often wondered where God was. If He

Pastor Kuenzel: Say ‘Yes’ To Defending Others, Speaking Well Of Others, Putting Best Construction On Everything

By Pastor BRUCE KUENZEL
Bethlehem Lutheran Church

Words have power. So in Martin Luther’s Small Catechism he says this about the Eighth Commandment: “’You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’ What does this mean? We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.”

For the last year I’ve been thinking about Luther’s explanation in relation to our political culture and campaigns. It seems to me that this commandment is deliberately and routinely Read More

How The Hen House Turns: Living Peacefully With Squirrels

By Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Sometimes—not often—the message we humans receive from wildlife can be so clear it’s unmistakable. It can erase our presumptions or negate accusations of anthropomorphizing.

We understand when dogs are excited and happy, or not. Years ago, the snarl and open claws told us that our cat Oscar was not happy with the neighbor’s dog. However, Oscar “loved” our dog Boots. They hunted gophers together when they weren’t curled up together napping. The clues to their inner life were obvious.

So it was yesterday– we understood Read More

Pastor Granillo: Our Problem With Evil

By Pastor RAUL GRANILLO
Los Alamos

Our Problem with Evil.

There is a certain serenity that comes to me only when I am mowing the lawn. This week, as I was doing just that, my son was outside playing with the bubble machine. He was using a plastic toy as a sword to slice the bubbles as they came out. (Kyle really wants to be a Jedi!)

Fresh smell of cut grass, shining sunshine, bubbles floating through the air, laughing little boy; ah, summer life!

And then I noticed my daughter standing there behind my son. She was grasping her forehead and crying so I stopped the mower to ask what had happened. My son was already
