Pastor Granillo: Imaginary Friends

By Pastor RAUL GRANILLO
Los Alamos

My three-year-old son, Isaac, has an imaginary friend named Zappy. Zappy is well known in our family, and once even took a place at the dinner table. Isaac often tells us about the things Zappy says and does. Sometimes Isaac even blames Zappy for the mischief he gets into. While we don’t tolerate Isaac putting the blame on Zappy, we don’t worry too much about him having an imaginary friend. After all, Isaac is already noticing that Zappy can’t do a lot of the things real people can do. I am certain that Isaac will soon outgrow Zappy just as I outgrew my imaginary friend Read More

By Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Over the many years with birds and dogs and rabbits and a skunk in Los Alamos, I came to respect their intelligence, which I now believe has been vastly underrated, especially when it comes to food and sex. That’s why I found great delight when PBS ran a special called “Natural Born Hustlers.”

The Bower Bird with his fancy tunnel, decorated with carefully selected goodies in hope of  attracting a female, is one example. I hadn’t realized that some of those Read More

Abe Dispennette: Invest Locally

By ABE DISPENNETTE
Los Alamos

When I ask my clients what they see as their biggest threat to retirement the normal nervous answer is not having enough money. This answer is usually followed with a detailed explanation on how they plan to sacrifice and save more into their 401s to mitigate the threat. While this certainly is an issue we all need to closely monitor it does happen to ignore a hidden threat flying under most people’s radar – taxes!

I have found that many people think their tax burden will be nearly zero in retirement and they plan to live on 25-50 percent of their current
