Letter To The Editor: ‘Running For My Life’

By DELANEY RIEKE, President
Los Alamos Chapter of Hadassah

I hope by now most of you have seen fliers, received registration forms, or heard about the 5th Annual “Run for Her Life” April 19 at East Park.

There is nothing more therapeutic than going out on a run. Running clears my mind and frees my soul, but it wasn’t always like that for me. Not too long ago even the thought of jogging shorts and running shoes gave me panic attacks with flashbacks of a particular yelling gym teacher, a cramp in my side, and frantically searching for my inhaler.

I was one of those people who said,

Food On The Hill: Oatmeal Raisin Walnut Cookies

Oatmeal Raisin Walnut Cookies

With cookies, it seems sometimes that the population can be divided into two teams—those whose favorite cookie is the chocolate chip, and those who prefer oatmeal raisin. Count me as an oatmeal raisin team member. Even my chocolate chip cookies are simply oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips instead of raisins. (Try it! Delicious, if initially confusing. The chocolate chip team members usually examine them suspiciously, pointing at the dark bits, “What are those? Are there any raisins in here?”)

Predictably, the best recipe Read More

Quick and Inexpensive Ways to Change Up a Room

Looking around my office today, I felt the need to change it up. I painted the walls a beautiful blue two years ago, but after spending many hours in it each day, I need a visual change. I want a quick and inexpensive update. I’m sure some of you feel the same way about rooms in your home. Take heart, there are solutions – ones that won’t break the bank.

Interior designers know that a home is a constant work in process. Styles change. Tastes change. That’s why it’s Read More

Pastor Granillo: The Bigger Picture

The Bigger Picture

A.W. Tozer once said, “The Word of God well understood and religiously obeyed is the shortest route to spiritual perfection. And we must not select a few favorite passages to the exclusion of others. Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian.”

In the same way that a puzzle’s picture cannot be fully seen without all of the pieces, the scriptures in the Bible cannot be fully understood unless they are in context with the rest of the Bible.

Paul tells Timothy that the holy Scriptures, “are able to make you wise for salvation Read More

Fitness Column: Time To Get Started

By KENT PEGG
Los Alamos

One of the hardest parts of anyone’s workout program is getting it started. We all know the benefits of regular exercise but for many getting started can be the most difficult step to take.

Not having enough time, not having enough exercise knowledge, and not having enough energy are three of the most common cases people give as to why they never get going on an exercise program.

First, you can make time to exercise if you want to. I know it’s difficult to add one more thing into our already busy lives, but this is just too important to neglect. We make time for going to the coffee shop, Read More

How The Hen House Turns: Goats And Deer

How the Hen House Turns
By Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Goats and Deer

When we first moved to Los Alamos, we were told about a lady, Alice Westervelt, who had a house goat. Rumor had it that the goat had been easily trained, was quite civilized really, but that it ate everything in the garden.

Goats are famous for eating tin cans, but I suspect that was not Alice’s problem. She was probably not a Master Gardener, and she probably could not hang up her red shirts on the line outside to dry. Trains have probably never passed through Los Alamos, so there were none to flag. (“Bill Grogan’s Goat” will Read More

Food On The Hill: St. Patrick’s Day Sides—Colcannon Pie And Pickled Red Cabbage

Food on the Hill
By FELICIA ORTH

I decided long ago to cook vegetables separate from meat, even when they are traditionally cooked together. I didn’t like what happened to the vegetables when they were together; they often turned limp and greasy.

The two recipes that prompted this change in practice were osso buco and chicken soup. In each case I ended up cooking the meat and veggies separately and “marrying” them late in the cooking process. I’ve come to a similar conclusion with corned beef, cabbage and potatoes, and either add the vegetables near the end of the cooking of the corned beef Read More

Pastor Granillo: Driven

By Pastor RAUL GRANILLO

Driven

Every once in a while we get the opportunity to take a real look into this world. And, even if only for an instant, we see how many people there are that need someone to shine a light into their lives.

Every once in a while we see a glimpse of a smile from a face that we thought was chiseled into a frown by experiences of war, loss, poverty, disappointment and fear. And, every once in a while, we allow God to light our hearts with the Holy Spirit’s loving fire and ignite a passion in us that drives us to engage in whatever it takes to bring light and hope to every human being Read More

Los Alamos Jewish Center Hosts Annual Community Passover Seder At Betty Ehart Saturday April 4

LAJC News:

The Los Alamos Jewish Center will hold its annual community Passover Seder this year at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

The event is open to the public.

The Seder is a ceremonial dinner filled with rituals designed to celebrate the Jewish people’s exodus from Egypt. The Seder, which is Hebrew for “order”, ushers in the week of Pesach in which Jews refrain from eating Chametz (food with leavening).

The celebration of Passover commemorates the miraculous delivery of the Jews from years of slavery, ultimately culminating in the birth of the Torah, the Five Read More
