Letter to the Editor: On Big Ideas, Ignorance, and Irony
By ED SANTIAGOIt strikes me as ironic that in an age that has not known smallpox, in a town founded on reason, we’re debating whether or not a make-believe sky-god will be offended by our choice of date for a Big Idea conference.
Why limit our concern to Jehovah, though? Should we also check with Allah, God, Zeus, Amen-Ra, Quetzalcoatl, Zoroaster, Yukiyú, and the thousands of other gods mankind has invented throughout the millennia? Each of those has or had adherents whose belief is just as strong and whose sacred-day rules are just as arbitrary. No matter what day is picked Read More

Sustainability Tip: Green your Commute
Weekly Sustainability Tip:
Green your Commute
Reduce your environmental impact and commuting costs by using Atomic City Transit, biking or carpooling to work.
Atomic City Transit is free and a bus stop is not far from your front door, 91 percent of households are within a quarter mile of a bus stop. Every gallon of gas you save through greening your commute prevents the emission of more than 19 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Make it a priority this next week to take the bus, bike or carpool at least one day to help create a more sustainable Los Alamos County.

Column: Couldn’t Believe Marriage Equality Becoming Reality in New Mexico So Rapidly
Wedding GiftsI stared at the screen in shock. Not that I wasn’t pleased – I couldn’t have been more pleased, but I could not believe marriage equality was becoming a reality in New Mexico so rapidly. Only two days before, the Doña Ana County Clerk began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Now, the Santa Fe County Clerk had been ordered by a judge to start issuing them, or explain later in court why she would not. Collective breath was held. Then came word that she would start issuing the licenses to same-sex couples at 2 p.m. Oh my! I had read an El Paso Times Read More

Letter to the Editor: The Next Big Idea Might Tackle Ignorance
By JUDITH STAUBER and DANIEL COOPER It should be brought to the attention of the entire Los Alamos community that the 2013 Next Big Idea is scheduled on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and most important day of the Jewish calendar.
We understand that the event organizers have been aware of this conflict since January but decided to maintain the regularly scheduled plan for the 2nd Saturday in September. That decision is something that many members of the Jewish community in Los Alamos take to heart.
We realize not all people are aware of when Jewish holidays take place and since Read More
How the Hen House Turns: Dogs Aren’t Enough When It Comes to Hawks
How the Hen House Turns: Dogs Aren’t Enough When It Comes to HawksMy neighbors enjoy the fact that Coopers Hawks nest in their back yard, which edges on the steep canyon that houses tall Ponderosa pines and a pleasant stream in Walnut Canyon. Trouble is, there is no way that the dogs can protect a lone chicken from a hungry chicken hawk.
Years ago, when Jupiter, an old red hen I rescued from another bird-lover who had rescued her from someone else, went missing, all I found was a tuft of red feathers. It simply happened too fast. The neighboring hawk took Read More

Sustainability Tip:
Green Your Labor Day
This Labor Day lets enjoy the outdoors and help preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Northern New Mexico.
If planning a Labor Day party, help reduce waste by using reusable plates, cups and cutlery. Also, remember to make it convenient for your family and friends to recycle their bottles/cans after enjoying an ice cold libation. If attending a party, do your part by recycling and consider alternative transportation to get to the fiesta, whether it be carpooling or bicycling.

Solo Traveler: Themed Travel – ArtThemed travel was something I found myself doing without being aware of it. It appears, in retrospect, that my trip to Spain was all about tracking down modern art.
Seven of Antoni Gaudí’s projects are now World Heritage sites. It’s hard to be in Barcelona for one hour without running across his name, seeing something inspired by him or viewing a building that he designed.

According to the Vedas and world’s oldest spiritual book Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krisha is the supreme creator of the whole creation and he is the maintainer also. He appeared on Earth many times to save the Earth from evil, and the last time he came was 5,200 years ago in Northern India, a city called Mathura. That is the day, which is celebrated widely across the world as Transcendental Read More
