Letter to the Editor: Skeptical Images New Brand ‘Live Exponentially’ Might Convey are the Right Ones

“Live Exponentially”?
I have no idea what that means, but it sure sounds expensive!
Yes, I get it: asking a company to come up with a community brand can be a risky endeavor. It certainly was a costly one, so I understand that the County Council may have been somewhat reluctant to admit at a public meeting that the out-of-town consulting firm’s community-marketing slogan was astoundingly bad.
But don’t we expect our community leaders to have the intestinal fortitude to stand up and admit the truth? Instead, all seven of our councilors—I suppose in an effort to try to Read More
‘Live Exponentially’ – Close, But No Cigar
By ROBERTA RANDLet me begin by saying I am not currently a Los Alamos resident. I’ve lived here in fits and spurts for over two decades. But I love this place. With all its cultural quirkiness, neighborly charm, off-the-charts natural beauty and an unusually high concentration of Ph.D.’s, Los Alamos reminds me of Mayberry on steroids.

Misusing MetaphorsUse of metaphors is probably the ultimate “socially constructed reality.” My favorite examples (from Kenwyn Smith’s Philosophical Problems in Thinking About Change: Snow blanketing the ground and snow sitting on the ground evoke different emotions in us. The former offers a sense of protection, and the latter domination. The context adds more complexity. In “the thick fog blanketed the city,” this “blanket” most decidedly does not offer any sense of protection.
We use “David and Goliath” as a metaphor for little guy’s beating the big guy despite all Read More
Letter to the Editor: Many Contribute to Play’s Success
By JIM SICILIANLetter to the Editor: Opportunity to Enrich Your Life
By BOB and SUSAN FUSELIERFor the past two years, Susan and I have been host parents for two amazing young adults from overseas. It is an understatement to say our lives have been greatly enriched by this opportunity. In addition to the privilege of sharing their lives for almost year, we became members of their families through Skype. The benefits to us are hard to enumerate, but include learning the customs and some of the language of those from another country, discussing our differences (some) and similarities (many), seeing the world from a different perspective, and enjoying the Read More
