Letter to the Editor: Until We Say No to Fear, Our Leaders Will Have No Reason to Change

By BOB FUSELIER
Los Alamos

A Louisiana relative of mine recently sent me a link to a set of posters from WWII that, among other things, called for sacrifice and courage by the American people. He asked, “What has happened to us as Americans?”

It’s a good question, one we should answer if we are to avoid the pitfalls that have faced every global leader in history. America cannot deny this reality. When faced with a common threat, a nation will either selflessly come together behind courageous and wise leaders or fall apart. Thank God we had the former during the 1940’s.

The American dream for that generation Read More

Recommendation Letters For What They Really Are – Self-Promotion & Self-Protection
By ELENA YANG

Like many many things in our lives, once a practice adds a positive sheen or serves a useful purpose, it becomes a fad, which in turn becomes an end in itself. “Recommendation letters” is one such practice. It has become absurdity onto itself … not all the time, but often enough.

What is the added value of a recommendation letter? Does it really offer more genuine information about the candidate than the candidate’s own track record would indicate? Are half the recommendation letters below Read More

Letter to the Editor: Deepest Gratitude For Support of Fundraisers for Joy Handsberry

By Emma Lathrop and Emily Pittman
Los Alamos

We watched recently as our community came together to support Joy Handsberry, a beloved math teacher at Los Alamos High School, in her fight against cancer.

As the organizers of the fundraisers, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the members of our community who gave their time, energy and services to help make these events possible.

First, we want to give special thanks to Valynn Purvis of “Parties To Go!” for donating a dunk tank and for providing a discounted bouncy house for the Jump For Joy fundraiser, as well as lighting for the overnight Read More

PEEC Amateur Naturalist: Part 4 Erosion of the Pajarito Plateau

Amateur Naturalist: Part 4 Erosion of the Pajarito Plateau
By ROBERT DRYJA

There have been three major geologic events that have contributed to the creation of the Pajarito Plateau. Two events occurred 1.0 and 1.4 million years ago when major eruptions to the west of Los Alamos created the Valles Caldera. Volcanic tuff from these eruptions accumulated hundreds of feet deep and created a broad plain extending from the Caldera to what is now the Rio Grande.

These eastward and southeastward flows encountered basaltic lava flows coming from another volcanic field to the southeast of what is now Read More

Pegg: The Right Time to Workout

The Right Time to Workout
By Kent Pegg

Whether you’re just beginning your workout program or are a seasoned veteran exerciser, you may be asking yourself “What is the best time of day to exercise?” It’s a tough question and one that you can find research to support virtually every time of day as the best.

The first thing to keep in mind when determining when you should exercise is your own personal preference. If one particular time of day works best for you, then that’s the time you should stick with. You’re far more likely to maintain your workout routine by doing what is easiest for you. How the Hen House Turns: Wild Neighbors (Number Three) Mr. Fluff

How the Hen House Turns:
Wild Neighbors (Number Three) Mr. Fluff
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Mr. Fluff was a self-assured scrub jay. He came every morning with other scrub jays to take unsalted peanuts from the front porch railing and hid them in the garden. He earned his name one day when he arrived a little later than usual and saw us eating breakfast in the kitchen. The Steller’s jays had already hid the morning’s eight peanuts.
