Letter to the Editor: Miracles Have Been Documented In This Enchanted Land

By LIDDIE F. MARTINEZ, President
LANL Major Subcontractor Consortium

In these times of partisan politics and declining budgets it is rare to see our elected leadership come together and stand united on any issue; in fact, it is unheard of. But this is New Mexico and miracles have been documented before in this Enchanted Land.

Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard facilitated this miracle by successfully sponsoring House Memorial #79 calling for collaboration and coordination on a state-wide level to support, maintain and increase local business procurement by federal institutions.

Letter to the Editor: I Commend Those Who Have Worked on Charter Review

By LINDA GOFORTH
Los Alamos

I want to commend those who have worked on the Charter Review after reading it. Since I’ll not be able to attend the meeting, I want to say a few words of reflection.

I spent 12 years of my life with others on the efforts to establish, what became the FL/HDABoard, which advises the County Council about historical preservation in specific ways usually. I have made blunders in my life, but in those years gave an ethical service, and we who served set groundwork for a love of Los Alamos in all of its historic and present day periods.

In the Charter Review there is a recommendation

Solo Traveler: Mexico’s Native Music
By SHERRY HARDAGE

The marimba was supposedly invented in Chiapas and the city of Chiapa de Corzo is the Marimba Capital of the World. It hosts a school for musicians and a workshop where traditional marimba construction is taught.

It is the music of Chiapas. Over the years there have been many compositions composed specifically for the instrument, though any lively piece of music can be played on it. The bars on this type of xylophone Read More

Yang: Those Little Annoying Things In Our Daily Life Can Add Up

Those Little Annoying Things In Our Daily Life Can Add Up
BY ELENA YANG

For instance, if the phone computerized recording tells me, “Remember, you must first dial ‘1’,” why couldn’t a program have been written that just inserts the “1” automatically? Or, when I key in my library ID number, with spaces as it appears on my card, I get, “please do not use space.” Then, why do you issue the card with the spaces (or, why not program to accommodate or ignore the “spaces”)? I am computer illiterate, so I am sure I miss nuances about programming. However, from a user’s point of view, my queries stand.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is entertaining for those of us who, due to familial or marital commitments, must accompany someone we love to movies in the comic book/superhero genre.

After sitting through all the “pow, boom, splat” as we call it at our house, one does come out of the film taking the advice of SHIELD Director Nick Fury, “Trust no one.” If you take this kind of movie too seriously, the world will feel much less safe Read More

AT Tax Time Don’t Forget How Corporate Income Tax Breaks Impact Your Tax Bill

By GERRY BRADLEY, MA
Senior Researcher and Policy Analyst
New Mexico Voices for Children

In mid-April, as we prepare our income tax returns, it’s likely we equate the amount of tax we owe with how much money we make and how many deductions we can take.

In truth, what we pay in all taxes, including income taxes, is dependent on many other variables, such as how much—or how little—profitable corporations are paying.

Corporate America is very good at lowering its income tax bills. It has been so successful, in fact, that corporate income taxes (CIT) make up a much smaller share of total federal tax revenue Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thank You Los Alamos!

By KATHY CLIFFORD
Coordinator for Friends of the Shelter

Last Sunday morning our community once again showed what a caring and generous group they are.

The Posse Lodge Cowboy Breakfast raised funds for our local Friends of the Shelter, and we are so grateful for their generosity to allow FOS to fundraise with them. The workers from the Posse Lodge were helpful, cheerful and hard-working as always.

Our successful breakfast is due in no small part to many FOS volunteers. Gift Baskets were donated by 13-year old Madison Mas of Best Buddy Baskets and Zena Thomas for our silent auction.
