Letter to the Editor: LA and Hollywood

By RICHARD HANNEMANN
Los Alamos

I sympathize with folks being more than inconvenienced by movie making. Folks in LA (big version) are far more used to the annoyance than in LA (not so big version).

Movie making does generate an income stream of some amount to Los Alamos — in taxes, fees, rentals, re-imbursements, and other expenditures. Question is: is it worth the headache? The cameras roll in, the cameras roll, the cameras roll out. It’s the Hollywood drive-by shooting.

But how much post-production is done here? Are local computer graphics artists

Letter to the Editor: My Two Cents About Movie Productions in Local Neighborhoods

By KEI DAVIS
Chamisa Street Homeowner
Los Alamos

Regarding Ellen Walton’s Letter to the Editor (click here) about the current filming in White Rock, I’d like to add my two cents.

A few years back there was a movie production of some weeks’ duration on Chamisa Street in Los Alamos. The nominal site was two houses down from mine, which is on a corner. There were numerous offensive aspects to this:

  • Traffic control. The crew took it upon themselves to regulate traffic on Chamisa, barring all but residents of the affected section. Their manner in doing this was extremely arrogant

Letter to the Editor: Spraying Herbicide Environmental Risk to Every Person, Pet, Wildlife and Beneficial Insect

By E. JACOB
Los Alamos

I agree with Diana McPherson of White Rock regarding the county’s use of herbicides. Last year the county sprayed herbicide along the sidewalks at Western Area Park, a park well used by families and pet owners, killing not only the minimal amount of weeds that might have existed but all the grass bordering the sidewalk to within six inches.

The irony of this procedure is that it left the borders looking terrible and the weeds survived and came back during the summer sprinkling with a vengeance!

So not only was it a waste of chemical, time and

Letter to the Editor: Holding People to Higher Standard Should Be Only Way to Go

By EVA LYMON
Los Alamos

There is an opinion piece in the Los Alamos Daily Post today (April 4) about not criticizing the police for killing people because ‘we haven’t walked in their shoes.’

Under this logic we shouldn’t criticize teachers for mistreating students because after all ‘we haven’t walked in their shoes.’ Nor should we criticize anyone with a difficult job who mistreats people, prison guards who kill inmates, priests who molest children, the list goes on.

Maybe the entire concept of holding people to a higher standard should just be thrown out altogether and we should accept mediocrity, Read More

Letter to the Editor: Response to County’s Plan for Herbicide Spraying Next Week

By DIANA MCPHERSON
White Rock

As a citizen of White Rock, I am requesting the county cease their planned use of the chemical herbicides, Dupont HYVAR X-L and Monsanto Ranger Pro, during the week
of April 7 “along the gutter/pavement lines throughout the community.”

Active ingredient of HYVAR X-L

The active ingredient in HYVAR X-L is 5-Bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil, more commonly known as Bromacil. Bromacil stops the photosynthesis process of the weeds.
This would happen to other plants were Bromacil accidentally spread to non-target plants.

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Film Operations and Residents on Monte Rey South

By ELLEN WALTON
Daughter of long-time Monte Rey South residents Leona and Roddy Walton

Why should one invest in a residential home in this community? Those of us who invest and stay here are apparently at the mercy of the film industry and whatever other industry decides to woo our neighbors and our county government.

The latest film activity in our community has brought great disruption to Pajarito Acres. Film vehicles are parked in the roadway on Monte Rey South. Official County communication was received by residents second-hand after commercial activity began. It clearly stated that all Read More

Letter to the Editor: Do Not Criticize Your Neighbor

By WENDY HOFFMAN
Los Alamos/Albuquerque

To those of you who are “on board” with the anti-APD protests in Albuquerque: If you’ve never ridden with a policeman or policewoman on patrol, do not criticize. You cannot imagine the stress of a job (for the officer or his/her family) in which any given encounter can be a death threat.

Mr. (Khal) Spencer is correct in citing the broken behavioral health system as one factor in the tragic death of Mr. Boyd, but the ill-advised protests did nothing to help the situation and could wreak long-term adverse consequences. (See Spencer’s Read More
