Home Country: Pearls Before Wine

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

Dud was awfully quiet all through the daily dissemination of anything on page one of the Valley Weekly Miracle, which wasn’t like him at all. Just sucked down caffeine and silently shook his head now and then.

  “Anita okay, Dud?”

  “Oh … sure, Doc.”

You okay?”

He nodded, then looked up with a wistful, philosophical look that our guys don’t usually get until after the buttered toast. “Sometimes,” he said, “I think it’s pearls before swine, that’s all.”

We waited.

“Music, I mean. You know how you practice and practice and then you get good enough to actually do something? Well, Read More

Rickman: My Take On Mystery Animal Photo

By JAMES RICKMAN
Los Alamos

With regard to Ron Roybal’s mystery photograph, back in February 1855, news accounts in England reported the strange overnight appearance of “The Devil’s Footprints” in east and south Devon. These hoof-like prints appeared in the snow overnight, spanned 40 to 100 miles, and continued through and over myriad obstacles, including buildings, haystacks and drainpipes. Locals attributed the unsettling tracks to an overnight romp by Satan himself.

It’s no surprise that such an occurrence would be seen here in Los Alamos. We are a community that, like Beelzebub, loves Read More

Dannemann: A New Mexico Long-Range Wish List

“New Mexico 2050” was the very ambitious title of an only slightly ambitious project. In 2015, a small conference was held and a book was published, featuring in-depth analysis of major issues by respected New Mexico policy experts, edited by former U.S. Sen. Fred Harris.

The book contained a great deal of information but lacked the long-term vision I had hoped to see. For all my years here, New Mexico policy makers have focused on fixing our myriad immediate problems rather than aiming with determination at long-term goals. Read More

In a big state with a small population, paying for roads has always been tough, even during boom years. We simply have needs that outstrip whatever money is available.

Last year, an interim legislative subcommittee took an idea from the past and reshaped it for transportation. New Mexico has a number of trust funds established during times of high revenues. Instead of just spending all the money, lawmakers set it aside to be invested for future use.

In this case, the interim Transportation Infrastructure Revenue Subcommittee tried Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

Ice-fishing reports are coming in from Hopewell Lake between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla. This high-elevation lake is accessible by hiking in from the highway or by snowmobile. Fishing should  be good for stocked rainbow trout and wild brook trout.

Eagle Nest Lake is open for ice fishing. Fenton Lake should be open by next week. The best fishing now is on the larger rivers as the smaller streams are icing up. Always be sure to check road conditions and ice conditions before leaving for winter fishing trips.

Fr. Glenn: Finding Wisdom

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord—of the “We Three Kings of Orient Are” Christmastime hymn. But, if you read the account in St. Matthew’s Gospel (chapter 2), you’ll discover that they were not described as kings, but simply “wise men”, or “magi”, from the Greek magoi. They probably got the “king” designation due to the pricey gifts they brought—gold, frankincense and myrrh—to honor the “newborn king of the Jews,” whom they sought.

But apparently before the magi came, St. Luke records (Luke 2:8-20) that an angel host appeared to the Jewish shepherds in the field the Read More
