Our Brain contains two crucial types of support cells called astrocytes and microglia. The microglia are a type of immune cell which can be thought of as the garbage collector and of our brain’s communication highway or neurons.
Astrocytes on the other hand, are the brain’s construction crew responsible for providing neurons with the building blocks needed for growth. Most importantly, both of these cell types act as security guards, protecting our neurons from damage.Research indicates that both of these cell types are involved in the development Read More
Nebel: Thoughts On Climate Change
By RICHARD NEBEL
Los Alamos
Oct. 31, 2021 the PBS weekend news ran a story on climate change from Portland, Maine.
The story was about the increasing water levels in the Gulf of Maine which are now occasionally covering historic piers in Portland. The cause of this phenomenon is believed to be increasing temperatures in the Gulf of Maine due to climate change.
The irony of this is that in the past 30 years the lobster population in the Gulf of Maine has quadrupled, also a result of the increasing water temperatures. In short, Portland lobstermen are directly benefiting from climate change. That Read More

Op-Ed: Golf Course Controversy
By DAVID RULE
Tesuque
There has been a bit of a local controversy going on around proposed changes to the Los Alamos Municipal golf course.
The Council has decided to extend the driving range – at considerable cost and impact to the golf course at large.
Last week I wrote in and commented that it is pretty common for old courses to outgrow their ranges, but this is typically handled simply by extending or raising netting to contain practice balls.
The Council is apparently not interested in this simple solution – and argue that the extending the driving range is “a safety issue”.
Oh … I guess if Read More

Mesa Top Games and Toys
Los Alamos
With the change of season comes busy preparation for the next phase of the year. The better we prepare ourselves now, the more opportunities will be available come the new season, though the annual cycle will forever keep us occupied.
Such is the philosophy of Everdell (Starling Games, 2018), a competitive strategy worker placement board game.
The goal of Everdell is to earn the most victory points. In Everdell, players select an animal “meeple” as their character. The meeples will be deployed over the season to collect resources which can be Read More
Op-Ed: Raid On Trump’s Florida Home Political Persecution
By FRANK TRAMBLEY
1st Vice Chairman
Republican Party of New Mexico
In response to Valerie Fox’s Aug. 9 letter to the editor (link) criticizing Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce’s justified reaction to the recent FBI raid on former President Trump’s residence, Mar-a-Lago, I must say it is Valerie who is, in fact, tone deaf – and, in fact – quite blind.
While Ms. Fox’s letter attempts to incorporate her “criminal justice background” as a basis for her argument to demonize Trump, it becomes quite apparent that she turns a blind eye to facts which should at least make a reasonable Read More
