New Federal Rules May Affect SNAP Food Benefit Eligibility

SANTA FE — About 55,750 New Mexicans will need to work, volunteer or attend training for 80 hours a month to keep receiving SNAP food benefits under the new federal law taking effect Jan. 1, 2026.
These federal mandates, passed by Congress in July, expand work requirements for able-bodied adults to include those ages 55-64, add an exception for Native Americans, and remove exceptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness and former foster youth.

Finance Board Approves Final $67M Bond For State Fairgrounds Development

SANTA FE — The State Board of Finance today approved a $67 million bonding package for the State Fair District Board, representing the largest state investment in Albuquerque’s urban core in decades.
The bond will fund a predevelopment plan for the Fairgrounds’ southwest corner that includes a 10-acre public park with plazas, trails, play areas and restrooms, plus pedestrian-friendly upgrades along the Fairgrounds’ boundary.

State Releases Top New Mexico Baby Names Of 2025

SANTA FE — Olivia and Noah topped the list of baby names in New Mexico for 2025, while other long popular names like Liam, Sophia and Sofia continued to stay in the top 10.
The New Mexico Department of Health’s (NMDOH) Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics has released its provisional list of the top baby names of 2025:

- Emma falls out of the top 10 for the first time since NMDOH started tracking baby names in 2014. It is replaced by Aria, returning to the top 10 after a one-year absence.

Camp May Road will have an altered road closure schedule during the next two weeks to accommodate the holidays. The road will be closed for construction activities on Monday, Dec 22 and Tuesday, Dec. 23, and again the following week on Monday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Camp May Road will be open from Wednesdays through Sundays both weeks for public access.
