Los Alamos Place Names by Craig Martin of Los Alamos won for Best Reference Book when the winners in 53 categories of the 2013 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards were announced at an awards banquet at the Hotel Albuquerque Friday, Nov. 15.
Los Alamos Place Names was published by Bathtub Row Press in Los Alamos.

“The Nutcracker” is a fixture in Los Alamos. Watching the ballet Friday night, I could not think of a better way to kick off the holidays.
This is Dance Arts Los Alamos’ 16th “Nutcracker.” The ballet depicts a young girl who dreams about a journey into the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. This year, DALA brought on a new director, Jonathan Guise, and some new features were mixed into the show.

It was incredibly disheartening news to read that the Valles Caldera National Preserve Trust Board had suspended open hiking before it even began. Alice Brigham Waterman, age 94, passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, December 4, with family by her side. She had just spent a joyous Thanksgiving holiday with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even a great-great granddaughter. She had struggled for eight months with declining health after breaking an ankle and being diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma.

Winter Campaign: Keep Sidewalks Clear

During the winter months, the County would like to remind residents that it is important to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice so that they remain passable for postal workers, children walking to school and others who need to use them.
When possible, and depending upon available resources, County crews will conduct sidewalk-clearing operations by removing snow first from the adopted “safe routes to school” and then move to other selected sidewalks. The County does not clear every sidewalk due to limited resources. Read More
