Pearle Lois Thomsen died peacefully on October 12, 2013. She was born on February 12, 1920 and grew up during the Great Depression in Galesburg, Illinois.
She attended nursing school and worked as a nurse anesthetist. Her first husband, Johnny Maxwell, was killed in the South Pacific in World War II. She married John Thomsen in 1945 and lived in Seattle, Denver, Cleveland, and Peoria, Illinois; she lived much of her adult life in Des Moines, Iowa.

Grant Funds Española YMCA Teen Center Welding Program

ESPANOLA – Youth may participate in new sculptural welding arts program at the Española YMCA Teen Center thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Presbytery of Santa Fe.
Sculptural welding had been a favorite of the teens, according to Center Director Ben Sandoval, but the volunteer who lent his equipment found it too difficult to haul it to the Center. The program had been defunct for the last 18 months but this grant will enable the purchase of a welder, safety equipment and supplies, said Sandoval.

PHOENIX – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced a milestone for IRS e-file: more than 122 million returns were e-filed during 2013.
This year, the IRS received more than 45.2 million returns from those who prepared and e-filed their own returns on home computers, up from 43.2 million a year earlier, an increase of 4.6 percent. E-filed returns from tax professionals increased slightly, totaling more than 77 million returns.
