Los Alamos High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams won the State Championships Saturday at Rio Rancho High. This is the third-straight team title for the Topper boys who edged out Albuquerque Academy 52-54.
Topper Collin Hemez was named boys 4A State Champion after crossing the finish line in 15 minutes, 54.4 seconds.

“There are few people in recent Los Alamos history who have touched so many lives as Denise,” JJ Maier said.

CROP Walk/Turkey Trot To Combat Hunger

The Annual CROP Walk/Turkey Trot is 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 with sign up for the event starting at 1 p.m. at Los Alamos Middle School on North Mesa in Los Alamos.
The courses is 2.57 miles and a shorter 1.7 mile course bypassing the horse stables area. Food and drink will be available and everyone who fills out a chance ticket and puts it in the box before or after the runs has a chance to win one of 20-30 turkeys or 20 pumpkin pies after the conclusion of the runs.

Udall and Luján Announce Federal Assistance for Santa Clara Pueblo

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján announced that more than $2.8 million in federal assistance relief is being made available to Santa Clara Pueblo through the Public Assistance Grant Program to assist with the installation of debris collection structures. As a result of a disaster declaration in August of 2012 in response to severe flooding from June 22 to July 12, 2012, the pueblo was made eligible for funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

NJROTC Hosts Micah Jay Andersen Shoulder to Shoulder and Brain Brawl Competition

Saturday Nov. 1, the Los Alamos High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) unit hosted the Micah Jay Andersen Shoulder to Shoulder and Brain Brawl Competition. This event was the first of its kind in Area 9, which includes seven states and 60 schools.
The Los Alamos unit named the competition after a former cadet and LAHS graduate who was injured in Afghanistan by an IED and is now recovering in San Antonio.

The winner of the 2013 Logo Contest for the Los Alamos CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot is Helene Chavez, a fifth grader from Mountain Elementary School. Entrants in the contest had to be in fourth through sixth grade.
As the winner, Helene will get to see her design on more than 150 t-shirts given out to participants at the event. Competition for this honor was stiff, with three of the entries in close contention until the last moment, but Chavez’s design best caught the imagination of the judges, an event spokesman said.
