The Los Alamos School Board held a special meeting Tuesday evening in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater to discuss reducing the work load involved with teacher evaluation procedures being developed by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
The board voted 5-0 to find ways to reduce the work load on principals and teachers in regard to the new procedures. A full story of the special meeting will follow shortly in the Los Alamos Daily Post.

Y offers ‘Try-Us-Free’ Week

The Family YMCA is offering a special, “Try-Us Free,” week to anyone who lives or works in Los Alamos from Oct.19-26. The Y is also waiving the joining fee to their wellness facility from Oct. 15 throughout the rest of the month.
The Y’s CEO Linda Daly announced the free week as an outreach.

Half of the proceeds from the sale of the up and coming Renegade Mountain Band’s first album, Around the Middle, will be donated to The Family YMCA’s annual campaign through the month of November.
The Renegade Mountain Band, known at RMB, is also preforming from 8-10 p.m. Oct. 26 at a Boots, Band and BBQ benefit for the Y’s Española Teen Center at the Abiquiu Rural Events Center. Advanced ticket purchases by Oct. 18 are required.

Two Los Alamos residents were arrested late Friday night as part of a several week long drug trafficking case initiated by the Los Alamos Police Investigations Unit.
Kristy Hernandez, 43, and Jeffrey Aslin, 45, were arrested late Friday evening after a traffic stop was conducted in conjunction with arrest warrants issued on both subjects.

Paper Yard Waste Bags Best For County Collection Program
Residents on Taos Avenue in Los Alamos are doing their part to help reduce waste by placing leaves and pine needles in paper yard waste bags. The County is encouraging the use of paper yard waste bags during the Brush and Bulk Item Collection program to enable the materials to be composted instead of sent to the landfill. Dances of India will present an Indian adaptation of “Aladdin” in a benefit performance for “Santhitheeram,” a charitable trust for hospice care for the elderly in Kerala, India.
The show is 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at Duane Smith Auditorium on the Los Alamos High School Campus. Everyone is cordially invited. Admission is free, but donations are requested as all proceeds benefit the charity.
