U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., was in his office in the Hart Senate Building in Washington. D.C., Thursday when gunshots were reported. The Senator and the few staffers who were working quickly followed procedure, locking the doors and gathering in a designated secure place in the office, while the police worked to secure the area, Heinrich said in a statement. Unaccounted for staff were contacted and told to stay away from the building.

Dorothy Hoard Will Lead Historical Hike Along Abandoned Roads

The road that we now know as N.M. 4, used to be a major route into the Jemez Mountains for homesteaders before its designation as a state road in 1935.

On Oct. 12, Dorothy Hoard will lead a historical hike along sections of abandoned roads that preceded the designation of N.M. 4. Throughout the hike, Hoard will point out pre-1930s roads, old mountain routes and more.

GED Orientation Meeting Changed to Oct. 17

UNM-LA News:

The previously scheduled UNM-Los Alamos GED Orientation meeting has been changed to 1 p.m., Oct. 17 in the Adult Learning Center, Room B17. The meeting was formerly scheduled for Oct. 16.

Attendance at the orientation is mandatory because the staff walks the students through the enrollment process and administers pretests.

Classwork for the next session will begin Oct. 22.

Los Alamos Team 4-H will hold an informational meeting at 7 p.m., Oct. 10 at 1042 Oro Court in Los Alamos.

4-H member choose from more than 100 projects and activities such as:

  • nature
  • gardening
  • horses
  • arts
  • crafts
  • cooking
  • raising a seeing eye puppy,
  • raising sheep, rabbits, goats, dairy and beef cattle
  • and many others

County Administrator Harry Burgess announced this morning that he has extended an offer to Dino Sgambellone to be the next Police Chief of Los Alamos County.

“We had an excellent pool of candidates,” Burgess said, “All five of the top candidates who were in Los Alamos two weeks ago for interviews were well-qualified to be the next Police Chief.”

Power Outage at North Mesa Resolved

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities officials report that power was interrupted in the Sioux Street area of North Mesa about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

DPU linemen were deployed to investigate. An underground line fault was determined to be the cause of the outage and by about 3:45 p.m., the affected residents had power restored to their homes.

“This particular line segment, up to Cheyenne, has been identified and prioritized for replacement with funds budgeted to replace the section,” said DPU’s Deputy Utilities Manager Rafael De La Torre.   Read More
