Looks like we’ll have this week off. No more threats of a deep freeze. However, Halloween is coming soon, and that means anything goes, including three feet of snow. That was years ago, so maybe now all we have to worry our birds about is Arctic air, especially if the temperature drops below 14 F. If water dribbles down the hose, even a little bit, you’re hosed.

WILBUR BROWN July 6, 1932–Sept. 17, 2013

Wilbur Knight Brown of Durango died from pneumonia Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 81.

Dr. Brown was born July 6, 1932 in Oakland, Calif., to Herbert and Donna Brown. He grew up in Piedmont, Calif., and graduated from Piedmont High School.  

Known to family and friends as Bill, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, and obtained a doctoral degree in nuclear engineering. While at Berkeley, Bill was involved in the NROTC program and subsequently served in the U.S. Navy, obtaining the rank Read More

Local Resident Collecting Hand-knits for Black Forest Fire Victims

Tina Derr of Los Alamos is coordinating a service project to collect hand-made hats, gloves, mittens and scarves for the fire survivors in the Black Forest region destroyed by fire this summer. The Black Forest is in the northern part of Colorado Springs, a part of El Paso County.

“I am hoping people will either sew, knit or crochet enough for each person to get one item but if miracles happen, maybe more,” Derr said.

Derr lost her own home in the Cerro Grande Fire in 2000.
