Many residents have been calling 311 and the Los Alamos Police Department regarding flooding in their homes.

For sandbags and/or assistance review the following:

IF IT IS AN EMERGENCY: Call 911 and LAPD will dispatch the Los Alamos Fire Department to help mitigate the situation.

IF IT IS ONLY PRECAUTIONARY: Los Alamos County is providing sand bags for residents at the Pajarito Cliffs Site, 101 Camino Entrada, just inside the gate at the Sand Barn. Signs are posted to help direct people to the location. Direct questions to 662-8113.

Due to extraordinary rainfall pounding the local area, the Biological Research Laboratory, adjacent to the Los Alamos Cooperative Market at 95 Entrada Dr., had a dramatic retaining wall failure this morning. There were no injuries reported and normal operations are underway inside the Lab.

LANL’s Weather Machine Measures 6.62 Inches of Rainfall Since Tuesday

Rainfall measurements at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Technical Area-6, which is the official weather station for Los Alamos, show an accumulation of 3.45 inches during the last 24 hours.

LANL Meteorologist Jean Dewart shared the following data captured at TA-6 showing a total of 6.62 inches of rainfall over the last four days:

  • Tuesday rainfall = 1.35 inches;
  • Wednesday rainfall = 0.10;
  • Thursday rainfall = 1.72 inches; and
  • Friday rainfall (at 11:15 a.m.) = 3.45 inches.

Bandelier is Closed Due to Flooding

Park Superintendent Jason Lott just confirmed that Bandelier National Monument is closed due to flooding. The park will likely be closed Saturday as well, he said.

“Our Flood Protection Plan has been effective … there has been no damage to our buildings or archeological areas that we are aware of at this time,” Lott said.

Lott added that no injuries have been reported as a result of this morning’s flooding and that all personnel are accounted for. Read More

Alert: All Roads Reopen Around Los Alamos But County Now Under Flash Flood Warning

The Los Alamos Police Department just announced that all roads around the Los Alamos area have reopened.

Commander Preston Ballew continues to urge motorists to stay off the roadways if at all possible. He asks those drivers who must be on the roads to exercize extreme caution.

The National Weather Service also just issued an alert advising that Los Alamos and the surrounding area is under a flash flood warning until 5 p.m. today. Read More

Map Portrays Rainstorm Over Los Alamos

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has issued a map portraying this morning’s storm activity over the Los Alamos area. The weather forecast includes numerous showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall throughout today, tonight and Saturday. Schools, LANL, County Remain Open Today

Los Alamos Public Schools, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Los Alamos County remain open today.

Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn told the Los Alamos Daily Post a few moments ago that the schools coordinate their closures with Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“We have not heard from the Lab so unless something changes, our schools will remain open today,” Washburn said.

Breaking News Update: Flooding, Debris Close Roadways – Police Urge Motorists to Take Extreme Caution

The Los Alamos Police Department just announced the following road closures due to the torrential rainstorm plaguing the area:

  • N.M. 4 toward Bandelier;
  • Truck Route;
  • West Road;
  • East Jemez; and
  • West Jemez.

“N.M. 502 is open but there is debris on the road and while the Main Hill Road is open, there is a danger of falling debris,” Commander Preston Ballew told the Los Alamos Daily Post moments ago.

Also, a citizen reported a boulder, debris and river-like conditions along the hairpin curves heading to the Jemez this morning.

Prescribed Burns Taking Place This Fall

Fall provides good prescribed burning conditions—warm days, cool nights and good ventilation for smoke. 

Fire managers on the Española Ranger District plan to use this time to treat 260 acres of hazardous fuels in the Borrego Mesa area, approximately two miles east of Cordova and three miles south of Truchas. NM K-12 Funding Cuts Among Deepest in Nation

ALBUQUERQUE—New Mexico ranks fifth worst in the nation in how deep it has cut spending on K-12 education on a per-student, inflation-adjusted basis since the start of the recession. These cuts deepened the recession, slowed the recovery, and will make New Mexico less prosperous in the future.

 A new report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) shows that New Mexico cut $874 per student in inflation-adjusted spending between fiscal years 2008 and 2014. Pegasus Staff Seeks Vendors & Items for Swap Meet

LAHS News:

Pegasus, Los Alamos High School’s art and literary magazine, has slated its fifth annual swap meet for Saturday, Sept. 21 in the LAHS parking lot along Diamond Drive.

Spaces cost $20 and vendors keep any money they make.

Donations of items for sale by the Pegasus students are being accepted for the event and may be dropped off at the LAHS Main Office through Friday, Sept. 20 or at 7:45 a.m. on sale day. Crafters are also welcome to participate. Vendors must supply their own tables and shade.

Local Bus Available to College Fair at UNM

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School is offering bus service Sept. 29 to the RMACAC College Fair at the University of New Mexico’s “The Pit” Arena.  

The bus leaves LAHS at 10 a.m. and returns at approximately 5 p.m. at a cost of $15 per rider. A minimum of 20 students are needed or the bus will be cancelled. Interested students should register by Sept. 25 with Connie Goettee in the Career Resource Center.

The Santa Fe Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which includes three wards in Los Alamos County (Los Alamos, Pajarito and White Rock Wards) is sponsoring a Preparedness Fair, titled “Oil in Your Lamp.”
