In 1953, Lou Pierotti of Los Alamos formed Pierotti’s Clowns, the only five-man fast-pitch softball team in the nation.  

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Pierotti, now in his 90s, shared the story of the Clowns with fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at Pinon Elementary School in White Rock and answered their questions about the team. Read More

After reading Stauber, Spencer and Santiago, (letters published in Los Alamos Daily Post) I would hope that those who believe in the God or no-god of their choice, would all learn that the best of all teachings is RESPECT.

Sensitivity to or respect of the beliefs of others does not imply acquiescence to their beliefs, whether they are in an ancient or modern version of “wisdom.”

I agree whole-heartedly with Stauber and Spencer that were the date conflicting with a Christian holiday, it would have been changed long ago without question.

An as-yet-undisclosed Los Alamos National Laboratory official will “revive” the 69-year-old tradition of playing a corpse on stage this weekend in the Los Alamos Little Theater’s production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

The Laboratory’s first director, Robert Oppenheimer, played the corpse in the Little Theater’s production of the same play in 1944. Other scientists filled in on occasion.

Board Approves Master’s Degree Program for Teachers

Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn, left, and Superintendent Gene Schmidt asked the School Board Tuesday night to grant approval of a plan to create a master’s degree program for Los Alamos teachers. FCC Will Address Rural Dropped Calls

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., welcomed news that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will take steps to prevent telecommunications operators from dropping calls from rural customers.

During a hearing of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Udall, who chairs the subcommittee, secured the promise from FCC Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn that FCC regulators will ensure providers will no longer discriminate against calls coming from rural areas.

PLAN Test for Sophomores Set for Oct. 26

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School will administer the PLAN test 7:45-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

The PLAN test is offered by the ACT Company, and is designed specifically for sophomores. 

Unlike the PSAT, the PLAN test is optional and is only offered to sophomores. In addition to measuring English, math, reading and science reasoning in a format similar to that of the ACT, the PLAN provides additional assessment of study skills, educational needs and career choices. 

Space for this test is limited, so interested sophomores are encouraged to register quickly.

Chairman Sam Bregman has announced that the New Mexico Democratic Party will host a Jobs Forum 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Hall, 4921 Alexander Blvd. NE in Albuquerque.
