June R. Jurney, born Virginia June Ramsdell, died peacefully at home April 25 at the age of 84.
June was raised in Mendota, WI, the youngest child of Martha and Harrison Ramsdell. She outlived her parents, her husband, and all her siblings: Leland, Dorothy, Eleanor, and Irene.
Like her sisters, June became a nurse. In July 1950 she and her sister Irene sailed to Europe to work at the American Hospital of Paris. At the hospital, she befriended the writer Richard Wright, who was a patient. He later introduced June and Irene to a Paris they otherwise never would Read More

PEEC Captures Bear On Camera!
Critter Cam at PEEC: We got the bear! It looks like (s)he has visited almost every night in the past four days. To recap, our bee hive was trashed around July 6. The bear first walked in front of our critter camera at 1 a.m. July 8, then it snapped photos at 2 a.m. 3 a.m.and 11 p.m. July 9. The last sighting was around 4 a.m. July 10. After almost every bear visit, a coyote followed, most likely picking up any scraps left by the bear. Certainly some excitement going on after hours at PEEC! POLICE NEWS:
A man and woman died early this morning after their vehicle collided with a flatbed on N.M. 68.
Authorities identified the victims as Marissa Martinez, 19, and her boyfriend Eric Romero, 21, both from Alcalde.
Martinez was driving and according to Española Public Safety Director Eric Garcia, her vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed along N.M. 68 about 8:15 a.m. when the flatbed carrying a backhoe entered the roadway on the north side of Española.

Bandelier National Monument will be offering ranger-guided evening walks at the park’s Tsankawi section 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Chase Britton became Civil Air Patrol’s newest pilot June 13 after passing his FAA check ride with flying colors.
The event took place at Santa Fe Municipal Airport. Britton used a Civil Air Patrol Cessna 172 for both his training as well as the check ride. His training was provided by CAP instructors SMSgt. Chuck Grosvenor and Lt. Col. Rick Thomas.

JEMEZ SPRINGS—For the past few days, the Thompson Ridge burn scar has experienced some monsoon rain events.
The Forest Services Jemez Springs Ranger Station and the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) shared these recent observations:
- Saturday afternoon, July 6, there was some minor sheet flow flooding along the VC02 road in the lower Redondo Canyon (near the west gate), but no flooding was reported in the upper Redondo watershed (Union building and up-canyon) area.

Junior Wrestling Clinic at YMCA July 15-19

Letter to the Editor: Beware of Considerate Behavior
By RICHARD NEBELOne of the nice things about living in Los Alamos is that we have so many considerate drivers.
However, this can also cause problems. My understanding is that you yield for pedestrians in crosswalks, but you don’t yield for golf carts. Yet I don’t know how many times I have seen automobiles stop at the crosswalk at the western end of the golf course and wave golf carts out into the middle of Diamond Drive.

The Annual Republican Summer Picnic will be hosted by the Los Alamos Republican Party along with the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women.
