Community members, family and friends filled Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Canyon Road this morning to say goodbye to Los Alamos High School student Nikolas Ventura-Arencon.

Ventura-Arencon, 14, was a ninth grade student at Los Alamos High School who died in a head-on collision Nov. 21 on N.M. 4 near the White Rock “Y.”

The Los Alamos County Council Tuesday night approved the certification that the required 1,327 signatures were not obtained by the due date of Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 to change the County Charter to expand the duties of the Los Alamos County Sheriff.
 
The Sheriff’s Office currently is responsible for the service of legal process from various courts and court support services and maintains the County’s Sex Offender Registry.

Council Approves Artwork For Animal Shelter

During Tuesday night’s meeting, Councilors unanimously approved recommendations from the Art in Public Places Board to purchase a roof-top sculpture, two large acrylic murals and two smaller pieces to decorate the Los Alamos Animal Shelter at 226 East Road. The roof-top sculpture by artist Carrie Quade, illustrated here, will cost $8,500 plus installation charges. Audit of LANL Notes Millions in Unresolved Costs in FY2010

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Inspector General has identified millions of dollars in “Questioned, Unresolved and Potentially Unallowable Costs” incurred by Los Alamos National Laboratory during Fiscal Year 2010 ending Sept. 30, 2010. 

In a memorandum released this month to the National Nuclear Security Administration, Rickey R. Hass of the Office of Inspector Geneneral reported specific problems uncovered by an audit of LANL’s FY 2010 financial reports.

First, a big “Thank You” to all the citizens of Los Alamos County who gave generously to the recent Letter Carrier-Boy Scout Fall Food Drive Saturday Nov. 17.

An estimated 18,000 lbs of food and supplies were collected with about 1,000 pounds sent to the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen in Espanola.

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cups nuts
  • 3 chopped pears

Los Alamos High School trumpeter Aaron Bao has been accepted as a finalist in the honors band for the 2013 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York next summer.

Last June, he was selected as a member of the National Association of Music Education National Honor Ensemble and performed at the Kennedy Center.

A senior, Bao has played trumpet since fifth grade. He successfully auditioned for all-state and Southwest Honor Band in 10th and 11th grade.
