The national movement calling for baby-friendly theaters has reached Los Alamos.
“Driving Force” – a local group formed for foreign spouses by Jim Nesmith, Julie Ranger and Veronica Magnelind has initiated a special program called “Babes in Arm” in collaboration with the Real Deal Theater, 2552 Central Ave.
In the theater at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, the lights will be up, sound for the movie will be down and mothers or fathers and their children under 5 years of age will be enthusiastically welcomed.

Barbara Grothus, President of Los Alamos Sales Company, a unique salvage store affectionately dubbed “The Black Hole,” has announced that the business will close to the public on Nov. 3.
The business, established in 1953, has operated at 4015 Arkansas Ave., in Los Alamos since the 1970’s.
The family has an agreement with Alex Williams of Pasadena, Calif., to remove the remaining contents of the buildings starting on Nov. 5.

Sandra Salazar joined the Los Alamos Police Department in April 2009 as Chief Wayne Torpy’s assistant. She said that she has “loved” working in the Police Department.
She also worked at the County Administrator’s Office from November 1989 to April 2009 as the Administrative Secretary.

San Juan Prescribed Burn Begins Today

Beginning today, Wednesday Oct. 17, if conditions are favorable, fire managers plan to begin the 7,300 acre San Juan prescribed burn, located 3-5 miles northeast of Jemez Springs.
Approximately 2,500 acres are expected to be treated each day. Prescribed burning is the managed application of fire to wildland fuels (woody material) under specified conditions, within predetermined boundaries in an effort to reduce hazardous fuels, provide community protection, and restore forest health.

The Los Alamos Cooperative Market will host the opening of a photography exhibition from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.
The show, dubbed “Camino de Paz y Cooperación,” is a collaborative effort between the Co-op and local photographer Minesh Bacrania and depicts the close connection between Camino de Paz, the Montessori-based school and farm located in Santa Cruz, N.M. and the Los Alamos Co-op.

The Los Alamos Community Winds will open their concert season with “A World of Music” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at White Rock Baptist Church.

Maria Edulia (Bustos) Bridge died peacefully Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Los Alamos.
She was known to her family and friends as “Eddie” and to her grandchildren as “Honey.”
Eddie was born in Polvaderas, N.M. Sept. 24, 1922 to Pedro and Rufina (Lucero) Bustos.
She graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1940. During the early war years she worked at the Boeing aircraft factory in Seattle, Wash.
