State Farm Awards $96,250 Grant to Local JJAB
FAMILY YMCA NEWS:
The National State Farm Youth Advisory Board awarded a $96,250 grant to the Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) in support of an educational and outreach community garden.
JJAB has contracted with The Family YMCA to deliver the grant’s education and food-assistance objectives throughout the next year.
A small “barn-raising” is set for 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Los Alamos Cooperative Market, 95 Entrada Dr., in conjunction with the State Farm Youth Advisory Board grant award presentation.

- 4 large baking potatoes
- olive oil
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1 shallot, diced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 pound fresh lobster meat (or imitation)

LANL Training: How to Use Electronic Public Reading Room

The public is invited to participate in a trainingon how to use the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Electronic Public Reading Room.
The training is set for Tuesday, Oct. 23 with two one-hour sessions to choose from including 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center, WestJemez Road at Casa Grande.
Foreign nationals are allowed at the morning training only.

Letter to the Editor: Proposed Charter Changes Achieve Goal
By Ralph L. PhelpsWhen I was selected to join the Charter Review Committee, I approached the task very cautiously and conservatively because any changes that might be recommended required a very thorough vetting process to ensure the right decisions were made to our community’s fundamental law.

Community Invited to ‘Satch Cowan Trail’ Dedication

Residents are invited to attend the dedication ceremony for the new “Satch Cowan Trail” at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at the trailhead near the existing Quemazon Trail in Western Area.
The new trail — with construction led by the County’s Open Space Specialist Craig Martin, local trails volunteers, and fifth-grade students from Mountain Elementary School — parallels portions of the existing Quemazon trail near the canyon edge.
Prior to improvements, the trail had already been in existence and hiked for years as a “social trail.”
