Fr. Glenn: Do Likewise
As I scroll through the pictures of devastation wrought by the flood in Texas, many things go through my mind. First of all, there is the obvious: the tremendous power of nature unleashed—houses wrecked, vehicles tumbled, bridges collapsing. And so many lives—many of them just begun—gone. It is only the hardest of hearts that could not sympathize with an anguished heart, the sufferers’ plight, especially that of parents whose little ones are no longer here … and have not even been found.
Sadly, in a flood such as that with the many tons of debris and silt it carries with it, many Read More

Fr. Glenn: Not Yet…
So, we come to the end of a long Independence Day weekend—a time of celebration and rejoicing in our freedoms and our nation, and yet this year terribly marred by the tragedy of a number of young girls and others lost in flooding down in Texas. People inevitably ask at such times: “Why does God allow this?!!” … a question for which we have no adequate response—the mystery of human suffering. Even if we had some irrefutable answer for it, parents and family are in no condition to receive it with wounds so fresh and so deep.
And yet, in our faith, we have little doubt that such little innocents Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Necessity Of Conviction
Lots of criticism over the strike on the nuclear weapon development facilities in Iran last weekend. Peace is always the ideal, but when someone declares daily: “Death to our neighbors!” and you see him stockpiling guns and ammo, should one simply ignore it? Seeking peace does not entail being naïve, and if history teaches us anything, it teaches that one of the tragic constants is the megalomaniacal desire of some for ever greater power over others. How to face that danger is always a matter of debate.
That’s a great thing about democracies and democratic republics like our Read More

Los Alamos Jewish Center
A number of faith communities in Los Alamos have been working together to organize a candlelight vigil at Ashley Pond at 7 p.m. MDT on Wednesday, July 2, to raise awareness about the plight of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants in our country and reaffirm our identity as a nation that welcomes immigrants and thrives because of them.
This date was chosen because it falls between June 6, the anniversary of the date that the MS St. Louis was turned away from US shores in 1939 and July 6, the day in 1798 that the Alien Enemies Act was signed.

Fr. Glenn: Poured Out For You
This last Saturday—annually on June 21—the Catholic Church celebrates the memorial of St. Aloysius (pronounced “al-oh-IH-shus”) Gonzaga, a remarkable young Italian aristocrat of the latter 1500s who surrendered his lineage and inheritance to join the Jesuit religious order for the service of God and his fellow Man. Aloysius died at the young age of 23 after contracting the plague while serving plague victims. Even though he knew death was imminent, he refused to rest until he could physically work no more, and nearing his end wrote to his mother: “In return for my short and Read More
