By Fr. Glenn JonesDuring this time of year, in preparation for Christmas we Catholics read in Mass the Gospels referring to John the Baptist, who preached two major themes: repentance from evil, and producing good fruits of a good life—works of charity. Most Christians believe that without repentance, our good works have little spiritual effect … for doing evil is acting against (rejecting) the Good—i.e., the will of God—and consequently in some degree separates us from God—from Christ—who teaches us: “He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do Read More

Fr. Glenn: Pinhead Vs. Universe
By Fr. Glenn Jones:
Well, we hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! May God give you ever greater blessings in the coming Advent and Christmas seasons this month. With the delicious Thanksgiving meal arriving at the table, one could be tempted to check for one more hole left on his shortening belt and think:
“Sure seems like an awful waste of space.”
You might recognize that line from the movie “Contact”, when Jodie Foster’s character conjectures to some students that other life and civilizations certainly must exist beyond our own little planet life raft.
Sometimes people ask: “How would Read More

Fr. Glenn: Glutting
By Fr. Glenn Jones
Have you known persons who will only eat the finest foods, drink the finest wines, demand the finest in all things? The very idea of the McDonald’s drive-thru is anathema (though maybe they haven’t experienced their green chile double cheeseburgers. Yummmmm.) But if we constantly eat the finest food and drink, and deny ourselves no luxury, soon those things become one’s standard, and other things taste as sawdust. And so, when the finest becomes the expected rather than a “treat”, soon even the finest loses its specialness and its ability to please, and the search for something Read More
