Fr. Glenn: The End is Near! (…maybe)
By Fr. Glenn Jones
Well … it’s been a little while since I’ve seen a doomsayer prediction in the news … “The end is coming! … at X o’clock on [insert specific date here … rinse and repeat]” type. One can’t help but wonder why some who ascribe to the inerrancy of Biblical scriptures seem to forget Jesus: “Heaven and earth will pass away…But of that day and hour NO ONE knows…” (Matthew 24:35-36) Yet, despite such assurances from Jesus Himself, such predictions linger. Hopefully the doomsayer in his sincerity will be so kind as to discontinue the collection/tithing that week. “Ah … mortgage, schmortgage!” Read More

A happy Veterans Day weekend to all of you veterans out there! … most especially to you who have been ordered to, and have endured, the trials and tribulations of combat zones. And, even more especially, to all of you who have physical and/or mental scars attesting to your courage and sacrifice more than any badge or medal or parade ever could. Thank you so much for your service to our nation and, ultimately, to her people.
And … it’s a doubly special day for Marines every year. November 10 is the much-hailed and hallowed Marine Corps birthday … the anniversary of the establishment Read More

Fr. Glenn: ‘Must We?’
By Fr. Glenn Jones
If you read about (or have experienced) Armed Forces boot camp/basic training, you recognize that arrivals to that training are in that arrival simply breaking the shell, as it were, as “hatchlings” in the service. Basic training is an apt analogy for anyone beginning in a new field of study or profession … and certainly for the budding Christian. One isn’t a “good” soldier, sailor, airman or Marine right off the bat; to become proficient in any field takes time—even a lifetime. For example, one might call the child who completes his first arithmetic assignment a “mathematician”,

Fr. Glenn: Examples To Imitate
By Fr. Glenn Jones
You may see Catholic churches in your area posting notices about the celebration of “All Saints Day” on November 1. This is our annual celebration in which we honor our brothers and sisters in Christ who have, as St. Paul himself wrote: “…have fought the good fight… have finished the race… have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). …even unto death—deaths very often by martyrdom.
Some still erroneously believe: “There they are … worshipping saints again.” But, as CB’ers used to say: “Negatory, good buddy.” Whenever we Catholics/Orthodox hear others mistakenly accuse us of worshipping Read More

Fr. Glenn: In Me
By Fr. Glenn Jones
Saw an interesting (if disappointing) article from the Wall Street Journal on Friday: “Religiosity, Church Attendance Fall Sharply”—chronicling an apparent drop in those who adhere to ANY faith. Of course, this does not attest to either the truth or falsity of faith; it simply professes to measure those who believe. The number of people who believe in any particular thing attests neither to its truth or falsity; for example, if everyone believed the earth was flat, that wouldn’t make it so.
Serendipitously, that article appeared on the Friday prior to our weekend Catholic Read More

Fr. Glenn: Trusting The Upset Plan
By Fr. Glenn Jones
“The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft a-gley.”
Such is the actual text of “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns, often regarded the national poet of Scotland, though we Americans know the adage more commonly as “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” It’s rather a sadness that poetry is now so neglected, for few texts concentrate more human experience and wisdom into few words than poignant poetry. Indeed, many, if not most, of the wise adages we can access immediately from memory is not from novelists, but from poets. Like a treasure map, good poetry Read More
