Los Alamos Faith & Science Forum: Darwin And Beyond
Chick Keller
LAFASF News:
On Wednesday, June 20, Chick Keller presents the third talk in the Los Alamos Faith and Science Forum summer series. The title of Keller’s talk is “Darwin and Beyond”. The theme of the 2018 Summer Series is “Purposeful Evolution”.
Our current understanding of how the Earth came to be filled with different, but apparently related, animals is that they evolved from simple organisms to the very complex ones we see today. Thus, complex life (including humans) appeared gradually through evolution. However, current theories of evolution seem to say that this process is Read More

Fr. Glenn: Better Than The Fat Of Rams
By Rev. Glenn JonesVery often the Catholic Church, as well as various other Christian communities, are roundly criticized for being “behind the times” and that they need to “change their doctrine” to get more “in touch” with the current common culture. Such critics, I think, have quite a misunderstanding of what religion is.
Religion is not simply a convenient set of beliefs that fits whatever happens to be in vogue or trendy at a specific time and culture … unless one worships the culture and popularity itself. Rather, in speaking of Christianity Read More

Fr. Glenn: Off You Go!
By Rev. Glenn JonesIt seems that the Faith and Science forum will be starting up again this week, with an apparent focus on evolution for this summer season. Should be some interesting talks.
Even though the existence of the numerous different Christian denominations should make the fact obvious, many non-Christians seem to be unaware that Christians are not monolithic in many basic beliefs—evolution being one of them. Beliefs concerning the Bible and the interpretation of scripture—especially of the Creation accounts of Genesis—range Read More

Fr. Glenn: Thanks For The Memories…
By Rev. Glenn JonesI was watching a live Facebook feed of the graduation of one of our parish’s young lads at Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, the other day, and couldn’t help but reminisce of those days of young adulthood … walking those same fields and flight lines several decades ago, leaping from perfectly good airplanes, strutting with swelled chest (and swelled head), parading freshly-earned jump wings. And this old jarhead also can’t help swell with pride (and no little envy) at two other of our young lads who will be attending Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Leap Of Faith
By Rev. Glenn JonesMany thanks to Terry Goldman for his comments about last week’s column. He mentions a “quibble”, there’s really no quibble at all because we’re in full agreement concerning the realm of physical sciences. My point was that, absent tangible and verifiable evidence, we use that which we have to determine the likely existence (or not) of an entity.
For instance, in the dark matter example, even if no further evidence could be found either to the affirmation or contrary, science would likely still hypothesize its existence by Read More
