Fr. Glenn: See That You Despise None Of These

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

There’s a logical maxim which states: If all of A are B, and all B are C, then all A are C. As an example, we might say: If all vultures are birds, and all birds are animals, then all vultures are animals. True.

Let’s alter the maxim slightly and see if it remains true: If all of A are B, then all B must be A. In an example, we might put it this way: if all vultures are birds, then all birds are vultures. Uh … no; I think our little hummingbirds might object. And yet this is the faulty logic upon which is based so much prejudice and bigotry.

Fr. Glenn: ‘How Long, O Lord?!’

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Well, the elephant stomping about the room this week was definitely the dark revelations emerging from Pennsylvania of three hundred Catholic priests, other clergy and seminarians in the abuse of a thousand or more young people over several decades. Just when we Catholics think … hope … pray … that perhaps finally all such horrors have been rooted out so that we and our Church can heal, something else comes out—ripping open the wounds wider than before.

Victims, of course, suffer most immediately and tragically. It’s

Fr. Glenn: Keeping The Peace

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

A short addendum to last week’s column in which I sought to expound a bit on Pope Francis’ recent efforts to eliminate the use of the death penalty.

One of my parishioners reminded me of St. Maria Goretti, a young Italian girl who was stabbed resisting sexual assault by an 18-year-old man named Alexander, adamantly stating that she would rather die, believing that to submit would be to sin grievously. She did die the day after, but in finest Christian charity forgave her murderer/attempted rapist on her deathbed, knowing the Read More

Fr. Glenn: Executing Death

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Well, the media was somewhat abuzz with Pope Francis “changing” the teaching of the Catholic Church about the death penalty. It was really kind of a baby-step change, though, and largely due to the development of technology and society … being not so much a change of the teaching as simply a logical next step to what it already has been taught. It is certainly no change in essential Catholic dogma.

After all, why do we have the death penalty? In large part, for punishment/retribution, and for protection of society against

Fr. Glenn: Strengthening The Will

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Thought about writing an article on that beautiful virtue of humility, but while perusing the news Saturday morning, I was battered by several headlines which touched upon another virtue … or lack thereof, really: self-control … and its close relation: self-mastery

The headline was of a television exec accused of decades of abusing women … just the most recent of innumerable instances we read of sexual harassment and abuse. Child molester sent to prison for a decade. Missing children and Amber alerts. Celebrity marriage Read More

Fr. Glenn: Setting Example

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Sort of keeping on last week’s theme of honor and integrity, we know their importance in the individual life…and in the world.

It is largely due to the lack of honor and integrity, I think, that our society is becoming such a morass of lawsuits, interminable contracts, etc. The long-honored custom of taking someone at his word or asking to cement a deal by word and handshake, is considered almost laughable in our day … naïve at very least.

Why is that? Why was it that in the past a person’s word was considered gold, and yet now Read More
