Staff Report

Hanukkah began Tuesday evening and will continue through the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt.

Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew

Fr. Glenn: Lessons From A Coyote

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

Walking across our frigid parking lot last Thursday morning, as I often do I saw a coyote trotting along the edge in that characteristic coyote lope … returning from her journey to who-knows-where (likely scavenging around the high school … gnawing on tender freshmen now and again?) But this isn’t just any ol’ coyote; she’s the same one I’ve seen skulking about since early spring—easily recognized by an apparent malady reducing her fur to a minimum. Indeed, it often required a long look to confirm her really AS a coyote.

Fr. Glenn: Whatever Is Honorable

By Rev. Glenn Jones

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church

With all this sexual harassment stuff these days, we hesitate to click a news website or open a newspaper, for it means to receive yet another new revelation of some luminary who has strayed far from the path of propriety … followed by the almost inevitable “apology” … even though their malfeasance may have continued to the very time of being revealed. So … is he sorry for the behavior, or just sorry he was caught? One can’t help but wonder; one can’t help but doubt. What adds to the irksomeness is that some of the accused had formerly Read More

Pastor Granillo: He Is Coming

When He returns is not as important as the fact that we are ready for Him when He does return. ―A.W. Tozer

My mom was a working, single mom. (For the record, these people are among the highest level of superheroes.) This meant that my siblings and I would often come home from school and find the house empty because mom had to go to work. We had a procedure in place for when this happened. We were to lock the doors, find the list that she left for us, and then call her to let her know we were all safely at home. One of the most important rules she had was Read More

Fr. Glenn: Forgive Us Our Trespasses…

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church

Huh … Charles Manson died about a week ago. For those too young to remember, Manson was leader of a cult (“the Manson family”), which engaged in torture and murder back in the late 1960’s, but he fortunately was captured, his cult broken up and he had been in prison ever since … dying after many decades of incarceration at the age of 83.

Predictably, some headlines were vengeful and gloating; for example: “Make Room, Satan; Charles Manson is Finally Going to Hell”, and editorial cartoons were rife with depictions of Hell, Satan, Read More

Fr. Glenn: Respect To Whom Respect Is Due

By Rev. Glenn Jones
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
Los Alamos

It seems we can scarcely open a news website or newspaper each day—sometimes each hour—without reading that yet another celebrity, politician, or eminent person has been accused of sexual harassment or abuse.

Sexuality, of course, is one of our most basic drives—probably only just below survival itself … and sometimes even survival loses out. I’m certainly no sociologist/anthropologist, but when trying to discern reasons for human behavior, it seems helpful to transport oneself to millennia past when survival was Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Mystery Of Evil

By Rev. Glenn Jones

We often wonder why God allows certain things. The Sutherland Springs church shooting last Sunday is certainly one of those, and we could as easily recall Las Vegas, Orlando, or any other such event or tragedy, natural or manmade. Why did God allow those who love and worship Him—young and old—to die in the very midst of that worship?

And yet … needless violence has always been with us. Man’s violence against Man—Cain’s murder of his brother Abel—is one of the Bible’s first stories, and such violence has continued throughout

In our next lecture, we will look at some pieces painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Before there was Instagram and Snapchat, artists portrayed people and places chronicling the events of the day. In addition, images taught the people about God and divine things.

We will begin our visual tour in the town of Möhra where Martin Luther’s parents Hans and Margarethe were married. Next,
