Santa Fe – You take a risk every time you get behind the wheel. Every 11 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies in a motor vehicle accident. When driving in wintery weather conditions, your risk is 10 times greater.

Winter weather is right around the corner, and with it comes snow, ice and the hazards they can present to drivers.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s main goal is safety and we want to ensure you are as safe as possible while behind the wheel. The department would like to offer you the following recommendations for safe winter driving:

State Police Launch Checkpoints And Saturation Patrols In Counties Across State In November

New Mexico Sate Police will conduct Sobriety Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols and Registration, Insurance and Drivers’ License Checkpoints in all New Mexico counties throughout November.

Our efforts continue to show a significant reduction in alcohol related fatalities. This is attributed to the continued media attention and intensive advertising. These checkpoints are helping to change society’s attitude about drinking and driving. People are choosing to not drink and drive. Kaylie Burk, a junior at Los Alamos High School, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders on Nov. 14, 15 and 16 in Washington, D.C.

Daylight Saving Time ended at 2 a.m. today. Residents across the United States set their clocks back one hour to return to Standard Time. This does not apply for most of Arizona or Hawaii.

Daylight saving time was instituted Feb. 9, 1942. On this day, Congress pushed ahead standard time for the United States by one hour in each time zone, imposing daylight saving time – then called “war time.”
